John Carroll hit four home runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Box Score Wild finishes have defined this year's OAC Softball Tournament. Saturday's first game was no exception. Facing elimination the John Carroll University softball team needed extra innings to decide its fate. After another seventh inning rally it was not to be as the Blue Streaks bowed out to the host Polar Bears in Ada, Ohio.
Ohio Northern would win in nine innings 23-11.
Down five runs and the season on the line JCU needed yet another rally to put back against Ohio Northern. On the heels of Friday's 8-run seventh which spurted JCU to a come-from-behind win over ONU, the Blue Streaks made the game interesting tying the score and having the game-winning run nailed at the plate. Friday's seventh inning hero
Alyssa Coleman was at the front of the rally starting the inning off with a single. She would score on
Colleen Brady's RBI double.
Lia Locey reached via an error to push across JCU's second run of the inning.
The Blue Streaks top of the order came through to tie the game with a 2-run double by
Samantha Becker and a single up the middle by
Morgan Robinson.
John Carroll had a chance for a walkoff in the seventh but Becker was cut down at the plate on a Polar Bear relay through.
Primed with another opportunity for the walkoff in the eighth inning John Carroll could not come through at the dish. JCU loaded the bases on Locey's single and walks to
Angie Zappitelli and
Rebecca Reid. Kirsten Burden recovered retiring the next two Blue and Gold hitters.
Trailing 2-0 in the third, John Carroll's bats erupted for four home runs. Reid started the 6-run inning with her first career home run. Two batters later Becker followed suit sending a 1-2 pitch over the right-center fence. Brady and Locey rounded out the offensive outburst with back-to-back homers to close out the scoring. Brady's was a 3-run shot.
Gina Tosti took the loss to fall to 3-6. Leading the way offensive were Brady (3-for-5, 4 RBIs) and Becker (3-for-6, 3 RBIs).
The 3 hour and 5 minute game featured 39 hits and 11 errors. Each team had two big innings with JCU's 6-run third and 5-run seventh and ONU's 12-run ninth and 9-run fifth.
Ohio Northern improved to 22-18 while John Carroll fell to 19-18. Ohio Northern advances to play Muskingum for the OAC Championship while John Carroll is eliminated
