The John Carroll University baseball team continued to roll on Sunday.
Â
John Carroll finished off a three-game sweep over host Transylvania at Marquard Field in Lexington, Ky. JCU would win by scores of 10-4 and 7-2.
Â
With the sweep, John Carroll improves to 9-3 and has won seven games in a row. Transylvania falls to 3-7.
Â
Game OneJohn Carroll 10; Transylvania 4Nine Inning GameÂ
A late push from John Carroll's hitters and bullpen propelled the Blue Streaks to a 10-4 win in game one. John Carroll would score six of its 10 runs over the final three innings.
Â
Trailing 4-3 entering the seventh, the Blue Streaks struck for three runs to reclaim the lead at 6-4.
David Crowley brought in
Rob Cifelli with a single through the right side to tie the game at four.
Tyler Gentile added a sacrifice fly to bring in
Bobby Sabatino and hand John Carroll back the lead.
Mark Huddle laced a one-out single to bring in Crowley.
Â
Looking to answer right back Transylvania put two of the first three hitters in the bottom of the frame on via walks. Freshman
Mathis Newman entered and worked out of the jam with a strikeout and fly out to keep the Pioneers off the board.
Â
John Carroll armed its freshman right-hander with three insurance runs in the eight. Cifelli brought in
Patrick Scholla with a one-out single. The junior centerfielder immediately scored on a one-out triple from Sabatino. Crowley knocked in the JCU second baseman with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Newman responded by retiring the side in the eighth. He would go on to work the ninth to finish with 2 2/3 innings of work, earning his first collegiate save in the process.
Â
"Mathis came in and really stopped their momentum," said head coach
Marc Thibeault. "He got the big strikeout when we needed it and pitched to contact the rest of the way."
Â
The Blue Streaks scored one in the ninth. Cifelli would be hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run.
Â
John Carroll did lead 3-1 after three innings of play. After the Pioneers tied the score at one in the bottom of the first, catcher
Monroe Donnelly clubbed a leadoff home run to left to start the second. JCU scored its third run as Crowley came in to score on a passed ball.
Â
Senior
Anthony Libertini picked up the win to move to 1-0 on the year. The right-hander fired 1 2/3 innings of relief in support of starter
Brandon Maddern. Libertini allowed two runs on one hit. Maddern fired 4 2/3 innings only allowing one earned run.
Â
Offensively, JCU received three hits each from Cifielli and Sabatino. Cifelli would score three runs in the contest while driving in two.
Â
Game TwoJohn Carroll 7; Transylvania 2Nine Inning GameÂ
It was another impressive start for a John Carroll senior right-hander.
Â
Behind a third straight sharp outing from
Drew Doring, John Carroll cruised to a 7-2 win in the second game to sweep the series.
Â
Doring (3-0) fired seven sharp innings only scattering three hits. The senior struck out six while only allowing one run.
Â
Said Thibeault, "Drew scattered three hits over seven innings. He was not as sharp as he wanted to be, but he proved he can win without filling up the strikeout stats. He located when he had to. Drew was a pure example of adjusting to what was working for him today and being an overall sound pitcher."
Â
JCU staked Doring to a quick 3-0 lead through two innings. Sabatino scored on a wild pitch in the first for the game's first run. The Blue Streaks pushed the lead to two on a Cifelli bases-loaded single. JCU would capitalize on another TU miscue with
Jacob Schriner scoring on a wild pitch.
Â
It was another Transylvania miscue that allowed John Carroll to answer back in the fourth after the Pioneers had scored their first run of the game in the third. Crowley came in to score on a TU error.
Â
The Blue and Gold scored their final three runs in the fifth.
Mike Raschilla laced a one-out single to center bringing in Schriner who started the stanza with a leadoff triple. An RBI double from Cifelli knocked in Raschilla. Cifelli would later score on a Sabatino steal.
Â
Cifelli lead the way at the plate finishing 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Joining the junior with a multi-hit game were Huddle (3-for-4, two doubles), Schriner (2-for-5, two runs), and Sabatino (2-for-3).
Â
John Carroll is slated to return to action with a 4 p.m. midweek non-conference tilt against Hiram on Wednesday, March 18 at Schweickert Field. Stay tuned to www.jcusports.com and the JCU baseball Twitter account (
