Box Score The John Carroll University baseball team's April schedule has been rigorous. This month the team has squared off against nine teams either ranked or receiving votes in the D3baseball.com Top 25 Polls at the time of the games.
No. 9 Wooster would go on to top John Carroll 23-6 in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday afternoon at Schweickert Field.
John Carroll struck for two in the bottom of the second to earn an early 2-0 lead.
Tyler Gentile led off the inning being hit by the pitch. He would advance to third on
Mike Raschilla's one-out single. Gentile came in for the first run of the inning on the ninth balk called against opposition pitching this year.
Jacob Schriner stayed hot with a single to plate Raschilla.
Wooster responded with a nine-run third inning to open up a 9-2 lead. Joey Gilmore, Jamie Lackner and Tyler Schuch all delivered two-run singles to account for six of the nine runs in the frame.
John Carroll scored three runs in the home half of the third.
Rob Cifelli led off the inning with an opposite-field single and would be joined on base by
Bobby Sabatino who was hit by a pitch. Gentile delivered the mash for his first home run of the year to make it a 9-5 game.
Wooster added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to open up a 12-5 lead. The Fighting Scots would score two in the sixth, two in the seventh and seven in the eighth.
John Carroll did threaten in the bottom of the fourth. The Blue Streaks loaded up the bases before the Fighting Scots tracked down a long fly ball from Gentile on the warning track.
The Blue Streaks scored its final run in the sixth inning. Cifelli reached on a fielder's choice. Sabatino extended the inning with a single through the right side. Later in the frame, Cifelli would come in to score in to score on a wild pitch to make it a 14-6 game.
Gentile led the way at the plate for the Blue and Gold. The junior first baseman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs on the day. Sabatino finished with two hits while Cifelli scored two runs.
Mark Materise fell to 3-2 on the year with the loss.
Wooster improved to 25-5 with the win while John Carroll fell to 21-10.
John Carroll is back in action this weekend when it hosts Marietta. First pitch for the twin bill is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. The games are part of alumni weekend for the baseball program and head coach
