Box Score Late in the second half, and down two goals to Elmhurst, it could have been easy for the John Carroll men's soccer team to mentally pack up and call it a day.
Â
Instead, the Blue Streaks turned in one of the more incredible comebacks in recent memory.
Â
Three goals in the final 26 minutes gave John Carroll a stunning victory, 3-2, over host Elmhurst College in the Elmhurst Invitational in Elmhurst, Ill. on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Elmhurst quickly took advantage to start the day, as J.D. Garrett snuck a ball inside the far post less than nine minutes into the match. The Bluejays took a 2-0 lead early in the second half when Jake Cohen took a pass from Lucas Wetherby and again beat the JCU defense on the far post.
Â
Sophomore Jacob Lombardo gave the Blue Streaks hope in the 65th minute, when he dribbled up the middle off a pass from junior Justin Miller and found the net shot from 12 yards out.
Â
With eight minutes remaining, time was running out for John Carroll. Senior Kevin Pachuta found Miller, who chipped it over the keeper into the left corner to tie the game.
Â
It was Lombardo who would be the hero. His second goal of the game and third of the season came with just 2:02 left on the clock, as he finished off a long ball to the far post that clinched the victory.
Â
The Blue Streaks peppered the Bluejays defense with shots, letting loose for 23, including seven on goal. Elmhurst was whistled offsides five times and for 16 fouls. Â JCU was more disciplined, only being called for six fouls in the contest.
John Carroll returns home on Wednesday for a match with Saint Vincent at 4:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at jcusports.com.
