Blue Streaks Pile Up "Firsts" In Post-Florida Debut To Roll Past Oberlin

Individually, one can pick up nine points for a win as compared to four points for a second place finish in collegiate swimming and diving. In relays, it is an 11-to-4 difference between touching first and touching second.

Therefore, piling up first place finishes is paramount to a team victory in a dual meet.

John Carroll gathered plenty of first places en route to a 163-111 victory over Oberlin College in a non-conference meet Saturday at Johnson Natatorium.

Complete Results

This was the Blue Streaks' first competition since returning from their 12-day training trip to Florida, and the work put in showed up on the scoreboard.

John Carroll started the day with a 1-2 punch in the 400 Medley Relay. Jack Garrow, David Kirtek, Corey Kehm and John Scantling touched first in 3:44.05, followed by teammates Ben Parker, Egan Paul, Peter Neal and Evan McCoury in 3:51.84 -- edging Oberlin's "A" relay by less than two seconds for second place.

The victories kept pouring in. In the 200 Free, Brian Hulseman posted a winning time of 1:49.60. Garrow followed in the 100 Back with a first place mark of 56.37 (Kirtek was second in 57.60), and Paul was the winner in the 100 Breast in a time of 1:03.23.

Oberlin closed the gap somewhat with consecutive wins in the 200 Fly, 50 Free, 1-meter diving, and 100 Free, but John Carroll would answer with five wins in the next six events. Alec Bryson edged his teammate Garrow for the win in the 200 Back (Bryson went 2:03.42 to Garrow's 2:03.60), while Kirtek picked up the win in the 200 Breast (2:20.80).

Hulseman won for the second time in the 500 Free (5:05.82), and Neal won for the first time in the 100 Fly (56.67). Garrow led a 1-2 finish in the 200 IM as he swam a 2:10.05 to win, while Scantling went 2:11.42 to place second.
