The John Carroll University volleyball team opened up their OAC play at home this afternoon with a dominating win over Wilmington College. The Blue Streaks swept the Quakers in three sets (25-9, 25-11, 25-9).
John Carroll controlled the first set, 25-9, recording 15 kills as a team. Senior
Kit O'Shaughnessy led the Blue Streaks' offense with 12 assists and four kills. Sophomore
Becca Fortsch's six digs contributed to the Blue Streaks' strong defense.
The Quakers fought back opening up the second set with an early lead. Kennedy Harshaw had two early kills for the Quakers. The Blue Streaks came back and forced the Quakers to take a timeout as they started to pull away with a 15-9 lead. Senior
Leah Switalski ignited the Blue Streak offense with five strong kills. John Carroll dominated the second half of this set and closed it with a final score of 25-11.
John Carroll closed out the series with a strong team effort in the third set, 25-9. Senior
Madeline McDowell recorded four kills for the Streaks. Switalski and sophomore
Sydney Slater each contributed two kills.
Wilmington's Amber Rox recorded nine digs and Kara Short gave the Quaker offense 11 assists.
O'Shaughnessy had an outstanding offense performance recording 35 assists for the game. This win gives the Blue Streaks an overall record of 9-9 on the season.
"Today was a great team effort and a strong start to OAC play. There were definitely things we did well, but also things we have to work on moving forward in conference play. I'm excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us," said McDowell.
The Blue Streaks will continue their OAC play on the road at Heidelberg University on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
