John Carroll Digs Deep To Produce Third Conference Sweep Of The Year

Sometimes hidden in what appears to be a dominant effort was a moment of adversity.

That was the second set for the John Carroll Blue Streaks, who earned their way to a sweep of Capital University Saturday in Bexley, Ohio.

In producing a third sweep in conference play this season, John Carroll started off in phenomenal fashion. Behind five kills from Alexa Webber, the Blue Streaks rolled to a 25-16 triumph int he opening set. JCU had 14 kills total against just four kills for a .263 attack percentage.

It appeared to be going much the same way in the second game as the Blue Streaks rolled out to a 19-11 lead. But Capital upped its game, specifically through the offense of Courtney McCracken. The Crusaders standout had six kills as part of a 10-2 run that knotted the score at 21-21.

The host Crusaders actually had set point at 24-23, but the Blue Streaks survived by closing out the game on a 4-1 run. The late spark was the result of kills by Kit O'Shaughnessy and Julianne McGervey that delivered a 27-25 win.

Once the groove was found, and it was not given away. Webber had six kills amd Leah Switalski added three in the final set as John Carroll closed out the match with a 25-17 win.

Webber led the way with 13 kills total, with Katie Cosker playing exceptionally in the back row with 21 digs, O'Shaughnessy had 24 assists to go along with 14 digs.

The Blue Streaks had four aces, led by two from Caitlin Cianciolo.

John Carroll improves to 15-10 overall and 5-2 in the OAC, remaining in a third place tie with Mount Union, whom it will host Tuesday night in University Heights. Capital falls to 5-20 overall and 1-6 in league play.
