Overtime Proves Beneficial For JCU In Victory Over Undefeated Britons

It took a fifth quarter, but John Carroll University found the winning way.

The trip to Albion College was a beneficial one for John Carroll after head coach Kelly Morrone and company defeated the Britons, 74-70. The win pushes the Blue and Gold to 2-2 overall ahead of the start to Ohio Athletic Conference play, and handed Albion -- a team that hand defeated its first four opponents (which included Capital) by a combined 98 points -- its first loss of the campaign

Shmoo Pryor led John Carroll scorers with 21 points to go nicely with her two assists. Katlyn Spahar was a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line, which added to her 20 points in the contest. Rounding out the trio of Blue Streaks scorers in double digits was Sarah Sprecher. The freshman was 3-4 from beyond the three-point arc, which contributed to her 16 points and three assists in the game.

As a team, John Carroll shot 45.8-percent from the floor and was 4-for-11 from the three point line. JCU also forced Albion into 23 turnovers, which then the Blue Streaks translated into 25 extra points.

The meeting with Albion featured back-and-fourth scoring from both sides, which is a familiar sight for the Blue Streaks.

First quarter play was decided in the paint from both sides. Chelbi Graham and Pryor were the offensive leaders for the Blue Streaks when each chipped in four points. Throughout the first quarter, neither side could find more than a two-point advantage. The tight scoring forced a 15-15 tie to be carried over into second quarter play.

The second quarter was almost a carbon copy of first quarter play. Spahar found her scoring touch when she scored 10 of the Blue and Gold's 12 points in the quarter. Defensive pressure from the visiting kept the hosting Britons at bay for the majority of the second frame. It would take a traditional three-point play from the Albion side to give the hosts the one point advantage for the half.

Heading into the halftime break, Albion led John Carroll, 28-27. Spahar led all scorers with 12 points and the Blue Streaks manufactured a 45.5 shooting percentage from the first in the opening half.

John Carroll would make their voices heard in the third quarter.

The third frame featured the highest scoring period for both sides. John Carroll produced the highest score line when the team dropped 20 points in the quarter alone. Steady offensive dominance combined with defensive strength gave JCU their largest lead of the game when the visitors jumped out to a 43-38 lead with under two minutes to play.

Impressive play in the third quarter set the Blue Streaks up with a 47-43 lead heading into fourth quarter.

It would take Albion's best quarter of basketball to erase the lead put on by John Carroll. A 19 point performance in the final frame of regulation evened things up at 64 points a side.

Overtime would ensue.

Both teams would trade buckets down the stretch, but costly turnover from pesky defense ultimately sunk the hosting Britons.

With just over three minutes to play in the overtime period, Pryor forced a steal and score to give the Blue and Gold a 69-66 lead. It would be a lead the visiting Blue Streaks would not relinquish.

John Carroll snapped a two game skid with the victory.
