In a season that had both incredible highs and lows, the John Carroll women's cross country staff remained the steady anchor for the Blue Streaks.
Â
For the second consecutive season, the Women's Cross Country staff earned the prestigious OAC Staff of the Year title. Head coach
Kyle Basista, Assistant coach
Jake Alexander, and graduate assistant
Emily Mazzaferri this year's honor for their tremendous work throughout the campaign.
Â
At the All-Ohio Championship, the team clinched 3rd place among other DIII competitors and placed 16th in the overall race.Â
Erin Kiley lead the way for the Streaks, finishing in 38th.
Â
Capping off a hard fought season, the healthy and determined squad of women made a powerful statement at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship, stunning the running world in tying Otterbein, who was at that time a top 25 team in the country, for the first place trophy. Unfortunately, the Streaks were unable to claim the championship by virtue of the tie breaker, garnering silver medals from incredibly impressive performances from
Erin Kiley (6th),
Schasia Modrzynski (7th),
Cassie Schillero (9th),
Becky Rohwer (10th),
Lauren Gornik (14th), and
Christine Smith (22nd). Kiley, Modrzynski, and Schillero all earned All-OAC first team honors.
Â
Their conference performance only served to build momentum around the team and their success reached its pinnacle at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional race. JCU landed 4th out of 31 teams with all seven runners finishing in the top 100, solidifying themselves as the best OAC team at the meet. Kiley (22nd), Modrzynski (24th), and Rohwer (25th) earned all-region honors.Â
Â
"We are honored to have received this award and it is a credit to the hard work our coaching staff put in day in and day out," said Basista. "Most importantly though, the credit goes to each and every member of our women's team. This season was special with the group of student-athletes we had in seeing how they believed in each other and in the process."
Â
The women's team will be returning six of their nine top runners for next season.
