Most of the other matches went quickly in favor of John Carroll, so the final result was never in doubt.
But
Nicolette Bourlas wanted the win, and perseverance paid off for the Blue Streak sophomore, whose come-from-behind victory at #2 singles completed a 9-0 sweep of Wooster Friday night at the Western Reserve Racquet & Fitness Club in Streetsboro, Ohio.
Box ScoreThe Blue Streaks won the three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-3, with the #2 tandem of
Catherine Engel and
Jennifer Stroyne posting an 8-0 victory in their match.
In singles play, reigning Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week
Lauren O'Malley led a charge of five straight set victories. O'Malley at #1,Â
Madisyn Rini at #3, Engel at #4,Â
Katherine Devine at #5 and
Natalie Bourlas at #6 -- the last two at 6-0 6-0 -- gave JCU an 8-0 lead.
All that was left was the #2 match between
Nicolette Bourlas and Wooster's Morgan Wagers. The Fighting Scots sophomore had been a tough out the year before in a 6-3 John Carroll win, as Wagers won her singles match in the #4 slot in a losing cause.
Wagers got out to a good start this year as well, Taking the first set 6-3 and holding a 4-3 lead in the second. But Bourlas dug deep and won the final three games of the set to force a tiebreaker, which she won handily, 10-1.
The victory moves the Blue Streaks to 4-2 on the year, while Wooster -- about to embark on its Florida trip -- falls to 1-5.
