A scorching second quarter by the host team proved to be the undoing for John Carroll in a conference match-up against Wilmington Saturday at Fred Raizk Arena.
After a competitive opening quarter, JCU was outscored 26-12 in the second quarter as host Wilmington College took the game, 80-60.
Katlyn Spahar scored 16 points in the loss.
Shmoo Pryor and
Kahrin Spear each had nine points. The Blue Streaks were outrebounded, 48-22.
The Quakers came out swinging, attacking the basket early. Wilmington racked up seven free throw attempts in the first quarter, converting six. The Blue Streaks responded aggressively from the outside, hitting three shots from behind-the-arc. John Carroll was able to stay competitive, surviving a 9-0 run by the Quakers to trail by only six after 10 minutes.
The second quarter started out innocently as JCU scored the teams traded baskets. Wilmington then began an 18-4 run in the second. The Quakers bench proved to be key, as the reserves came in to record 27 points in the first half. Wilmington shot 65.5% from the floor, and commanded a 50-27 lead.
A strong third quarter performance for John Carroll was not enough to erase the deficit. The Blue Streaks were able to trim a 23-point halftime lead to 15 before Wilmington was able to pull away again.
Wilmington is now 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the OAC. John Carroll, which had won each of the last three times it visited Wilmington prior to today, falls to 4-11 overall and 2-6 in the OAC.
The Blue Streaks will next be in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Berea to take on the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets at 7:30 p.m.
