The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the All-Region honorees for the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field season, and a total of eight John Carroll women made the grade.
Chelbi Graham (High Jump), Erin Kiley (10,000 Meters), Nicole Pilewski (Javelin), Cassie Schillero (3,000 Steeplechase), Ashura Powell (4 x 400 Relay), Joy Nyaanga (4 x 400 Relay), Noelle Saluan (4 x 400 Relay) and Rachel Schubert (4 x 400 Relay) were honored for their efforts in 2017.
Graham was an All-American this season for JCU, taking seventh place in the high jump at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships which were held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. She is John Carroll's first female outdoor All-American since Emily Mapes in 2012, and the first in the high jump since Beth Grzybowski won the national title in 2002.
Kiley became the first John Carroll women's athlete to compete in the 10,000 meter run at a national championship meet. The junior who was the OAC champion in that event turned in a time of 37:51.98, good for 21st place. Kiley set the school record two weeks before (35:14.33) at the Dr. Keeler Invitational.
Another conference champion who made the all-region list was Pilewski, who grabbed her first career title in the javelin at the 2017 OAC Championships. Pilewski, who earned All-OAC accolades last year by placing third, was sitting in third place before she unleashed her winning distance on her final throw.
Schillero was the league runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the second consecutive year. With a time of 11:05.15, Schillero earned All-OAC honors for her efforts.
The 4 x 400 relay of Powell, Nyaanga, Saluan and Schubert posted a season best and school record time of 3:49.63 at the Great Lakes Region Qualifying Meet at Ohio Wesleyan on May 18. The following week, Powell, Nyaanga and Saluan teamed up with Kendall Miller in the 4 x 400 to take 14th place as the first JCU women's relay team in program history to compete in the NCAA Division III Championships.Â
The top-five individuals in each event from each region – as well the region's top-three relay teams – earned All-Region distinction. The regions used for this award – Atlantic, Central, Great Lakes, Mideast, Midwest, New England, South/Southeast and West – match those used during cross country and the indoor track & field season.
A total of 935 men and 945 women were accorded All-Region honors for their efforts.
