John Carroll has played three home matches thus far, and two have gone five sets.
None, however, have been victories for the Blue Streaks as a 2-1 lead evaporated in a 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-10 win for visiting Hiram College Wednesday night at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
On September 6, the Blue Streaks battled the Notre Dame Falcons to five sets before falling, and tonight had a familiar feel to it.
JCU won the opening four points of game one, but it was all Hiram after that as the Terriers posted a five-point win in game one. But a resilient John Carroll effort fueled a rally in game two. Trailing 10-8, the Blue Streaks won 11 of the next 13 points to take a 19-12 advantage. Taking advantage of some Hiram errors, and using a tremendous effort from
Jenna Dvorsky, who had four of her career high ten kills in the frame, the Blue Streaks rolled to a 25-19 triumph.
The good time for the home squad continued with a 25-21 win in game three, punctuated by a rally from 16-13 down. The score was tied 21-21 late, but JCU won the final four points thanks to a pair of
Thommie Jackson blocks and a kill by
Alaina Mowinski that sealed the 25-21 decision.
Hiram righted its ship in game four, bursting out to a 10-2 lead and never looking back to force a fifth game.
The Terriers seized control early in the decider, taking an 8-5 lead at the switch and never relinquishing that advantage. The Blue Streaks struggled to find their form in that last stanza, supplying just two points off kills.
Sarah Calabrese led John Carroll (4-14) with 13 kills to compliment Dvorsky's career night.
Caitlin Cianciolo led all players with 33 digs while Jackson had two solo and five assisted blocks.
Hiram (12-5) had a team-high ten kills as well as a team-best four aces from maddie Fortune.
JCU will open Ohio Athletic Conference play this Saturday at Wilmington.
