Blue Streaks Split with Wilmington, #1 Wittenberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The John Carroll volleyball team split their two-match series in southwestern Ohio on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks swept Wilmington in their conference opener 3-0 during the afternoon before being swept by the Wittenberg Tigers just a few hours later.

John Carroll took set one against the Fightin' Quakers by a 25-20 score. Sarah Calabrese got the Blue Streaks off to a strong start with five kills, while Sydney Slater added three. Thommie Jackson also added a pair.

Wilmington made the score more interesting in set two, falling short by just three points (25-22). Jackson continued to shine at the net, tallying kills for the first and last point of the set for John Carroll. She notched five kills in the set.

Set three seemed like it was going in favor of the Blue Streaks, with John Carroll taking a lead as high as 10 (15-5). Wilmington would then come back to within point of JCU (23-22), but another kill by Jackson followed by an error by the Fightin' Quakers secured the win for the Blue Streaks.

Jackson led the Blue Streak offense, finishing the match with a career-high 14 kills, while Calabrese followed with 10. Jackson also added a solo block and two block assists.

From the service line, Maddie Christopher tied her season-best for service aces (3).

Against Wittenberg, the Blue Streaks fell in three sets to the team that is currently ranked first in the nation.

Julianne McGervey led the team in kills, finishing the match with eight. Alaina Mowinski, Calabrese, and Slater also combined for 18 of the kills for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll returns to play at home when they host conference rival Heidelberg on Tuesday, October 3 at 7 p.m.
