Box Score The John Carroll University Blue Streaks were stung by the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Tuesday night, moving John Carroll's record to 23-36 all-time in the series.
Â
Baldwin Wallace took the first three sets (20-25, 18-25, 16-25) to move John Carroll's record to 14-11 (1-5, OAC) on the season.
Â
Late in the first set off an assist from freshman
Rachel Bleile, a kill from sophomore
Sarah Calabrese gave John Carroll a 19-17 lead. Baldwin Wallace did not let a two point deficit get in the way from potentially losing the match. The Yellow Jackets went on to score 8 of the final 9 points, winning the first set 25-20.
Â
Early in the second set the Blue and Gold went on a 4-0 run, advancing the score to 8-6. That would be the last time JCU held the lead in the second match, as BW won set number two 25-18.
Â
Despite being down 2-0 in the first two sets, JCU refused to give up. The Blue and Gold were down 14-8 early but responded with another 4-0 run, cutting the BW lead to 14-12. Even though it was a respectable effort by John Carroll, Baldwin Wallace eventually pulled away, securing the match with a final score of 25-16.
Â
"We came out strong and followed the game plan. The unforced errors really hurt us as the match carried on," assistant coach
Brooke Turner said after the game. BW carried an advantage in kills (52-32), assists (45-29), and digs (44-42).
Â
The Blue Streaks held the advantage in aces (5-3) and blocks (6-3), with Bleile totaling three of the team's five aces. Freshman
Audrey Hardig totaled three of the team's six blocks with Calabrese and freshman
Carleen Ellerbruch adding a pair each.
Â
Freshman
Cassi Calamunci led the team in kills with nine and senior
Caitlin Cianciolo led the team in digs with 12.
Â
John Carroll only has three more games remaining in the regular season against Marietta, Heidelberg, and Wilmington. Tournament time is right around the corner and the Blue Streaks are keeping a positive attitude heading into the postseason. As Turner puts it, "anyone can beat anyone on any given day. If we play our game, we can shock the conference."
Â
The next match for the Blue Streaks will be on the road against Marietta at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 20.
