Mark Fino expects to have a very strong women's swimming & diving team ... eventually.
While he awaits several swimmers to come off the injured list, the team he
does have is still pretty darn good.
That was evident Saturday afternoon, as a complete effort by the Blue & Gold resulted in a 171-117 victory over visiting Ohio Northern University at the William H. Johnson Natatorium.
Results
The Blue Streaks flexed their muscles early, as JCU went 1-2 in the opening event of the meet, the 200 Medley Relay. The "A" quartet of Katelin Avenir,
Gwyn Ledrick, Tori Vale and
Shelbi Shearer won the race in 1:52.84, while the "B" foursome of
Felice Ferrante,
Chloe Ruggiero,
Samantha Nagy and
Maddie Dolce touched second in 1:55.65.
Dolce then got back in the water a few events later on won the 200 Free in 2:02.95.
Vale was the next JCU winner, taking first in the 100 Back (1:02.40).
In the 100 Breast, John Carroll again flexed its muscle by taking first and second. Ledrick, the All-American, won in 1:07.33, while Nagy was next to finish in 1:12.37.
Ruggiero (2:16.37) in the 200 Fly, and Avenir (2:15.73) in the 200 Back picked up wins, but it was not until the 200 Breast that John Carroll got its breathing room.
In that event, Ledrick led a 1-2-3 procession to the wall. Ledrick won in 2:31.33, followed by Ruggiero (2:33.82) and Nagy (2:36.63).
Wins by Vale in the 100 Fly (1:00.92) and Dolce in the 400 IM (4:54.67) set up a meet-ending punctuation victory in the 200 Free Relay, as Shearer,
Hope Scherger, Vale and Ledrick posted a win in 1:44.32.
JCU is now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the OAC.
