Elyssa Zablo (#26) made a school record 13 saves vs. Kenyon
Box Score In most cases, winning by a 20-9 score would probably shift focus away from the winning goalkeeper.
But in this case,
Elyssa Zablo deserves a piece of the credit. The sophomore started in goal for John Carroll as it opened up the 2018 season against out of conference foe Kenyon College, and her school-record 13 saves combined with a high-powered offense led to the 11-goal victory over the visitors Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.
The Blue and Gold were led on offense by the senior duo of
Grace Curatolo and
Gina Vilsack, Curatolo scored a game-high seven goals, while Vilsack added five.
John Carroll came out of the gates firing, gaining an early 3-0 lead. Curatolo and Vilsack found the back on the net on all three goals.
Meanwhile, Zablo was a force in goal denying the Ladies from gaining any momentum stopping five shots and allowing just one goal in the first 15 minutes of action.
Curatolo continued her domination recording a hat trick in the 19th minute of the first half. Vilsack would also shine bright, registering four goals in the first half.
The JCU defense was effective in slowing down the high powered Kenyon offense, allowing five goals in the first half in taking a 10-5 advantage. The Ladies had scored 19 times in a season-opening win over Otterbein Tuesday.
Coming back on the field, Megan Harte was ready, scoring a goal one minute into the second half, building JCU's lead six goals.
Kenyon would make adjustments to slow down Vilsack and Curatolo, but John Carroll showed its depth.
Colleen Grombala and Harte were consistently finding the back of the net in the second half.
The Ladies of Kenyon College would make a push later in the contest, but the Blue Streaks would stand tall and stop Kenyon.
John Carroll added insurance to their cause late in the contest going up 19-8 with 8:22 left in the game.
With the victory, John Carroll starts the season off on the right foot showing a well-rounded performance. The Blue Streaks held a slight 18-17 ground balls edge, while Kenyon had the better of the draw controls by an 18-13 count. JCU tallied 42 shots to Kenyon's 29.
Next up, John Carroll will host Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday, February 28th. The game is set for 6:00 p.m.
