Box Score The week began unlike any other in John Carroll women's lacrosse history.
For the first time since the inception of the program, participants in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III poll decided to bestow votes upon the Blue & Gold. Although JCU did not crack the top 25, the undefeated Blue Streaks were still listed in the section "others receiving votes".
Hoping to validate this recognition and keep their record spotless, the Blue Streaks hosted Allegheny College Wednesday night at Shula Stadium. Facing a team that John Carroll had defeated 15-14 in overtime last year, there would be a definitive challenge from the visitors.
John Carroll never trailed but had to go the full 60 minutes this evening to down the Gators, 22-16.
It was constant give and take on a cool but not cold evening in University Heights. JCU opened up a 3-0 lead only to have Allegheny score twice to cut its deficit to one. Every time John Carroll surged in the first half, Allegheny seemed poised to answer.
In the opening 30 minutes, the Blue Streaks never led by more than four goals but did match that lead, 14-10, heading to the locker room.
The pivotal moments came early in the second half. The Gators were aggressive from the opening whistle and scored three times in the opening six minutes to trim the Blue Streaks lead to 14-13. But
Rachel Dell and her crew refused to wilt. In fact, over the final 22:42, John Carroll would outscore Allegheny 8-3.
Seniors
Gina Vilsacka nd
Grace Curatolo each scored six goals while sophomore
Colleen Grombala added four. Also figuring in the mix were
Meghan Harte,
Brooke McQuinn and
Alexis Guage, all of whom had two goals.
Harte, Grombala and Curatolo also collected three assists.
For Vilsack, it was a historic night, as he sixth and final goal enabled her to become the first John Carroll player to reach 200 goals for a career.
McQuinn led a resurgent defensive effort in the second half. She finished the night with a team-high five caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Jenna Kaczmarczyk assisted with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Elyssa Zablo had nine saves to win her eighth consecutive game in goal.
John Carroll, which improved to a program-best 8-0 on the season, had the edge in shots (41-33) and draw control wins (24-16). The Gators (3-4) held a 26-21 advantage in ground balls.
