Box Score On any road trip, sometimes there will be bumps.
John Carroll University (2-2) traveled to Holland, Michigan to take on Hope College (3-1). In the first matchup ever between the two programs, the Flying Dutchmen got the win 9-7.
Hope started off strong in the first quarter. They would jump out to a 3-0 lead over JCU.
Bennett Gorman got the Blue Streaks on the board late in the quarter, and cut the deficit to 3-1 going into the second.
The Flying Dutchmen got the first goal of the second quarter to extend the lead to 4-1 with 12:32 left to play in the half. Both defenses would keep each opposing offense off the scoreboard for the majority of the quarter, and goalkeeper
Jacob Betz would start to settle in net, making a couple saves in the quarter.
The next goal would come with 4:32 left to play when
Peyton Elliott cut Hope's lead in half with a goal, and Gorman would be credited with the assist. Hope would add a goal seconds later, however, and they would take a 5-2 lead into halftime.
The first and second quarters were controlled by the Flying Dutchmen, but it would be a different story in the third.
Bennett Gorman scored two consecutive goals, one assisted by
Ryan Crater, and one unassisted, to cut Hope's lead to 5-4 with 4:37 left in the quarter. Just over two minutes later,
Skyler Blake scored to tie the game at 5-5. Blake would then assist Crater for his first goal of the game. JCU had their first lead of the game with 1:40 left to play in the third. Hope would tie the game with three seconds remaining to tie the game at 6-6 going into the final 15 minutes of play.
Skyler Blake scored again to start the fourth quarter, and the Blue and Gold regained the lead. Then, with 5:49 remaining, the Flying Dutchmen tied it up once again, and they would score again over a minute later. Hope added a goal in the final seconds to win by the final score of 9-7.
The Blue Streaks won the ground ball battle 36-26, and the face-off battle 10-18, with
Braden Kaib leading the charge.
Bennett Gorman finished the game with 3 goals and one assist.
Dan Smith had six ground balls on the afternoon.
JCU returns to action on Tuesday, March 13, to conclude their five-game road trip. Albion will be the opponent, and face-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
