Box Score In an offensive affair with the Big Red of Denison beginning the match on a 9-0 run to start the game, the Blue Streaks women's lacrosse team was forced to play from behind throughout the course of tonight's contest.
JCU used a second half rally cut the lead, cutting the match to 13-8 at the 7:33 mark in the second half, but their efforts were not enough.
The Blue Streaks women's lacrosse team dropped the second game of the season on Wednesday evening, falling to Denison University, 14-8, and falling to 11-2 overall on the season. Tonight's 14 goals allowed by the Blue Streaks were the third most scores allowed by JCU through 14 games this season.
Sophomore Colleen Grombala collected a team-high five points off of two goals and three assists, as senior Meghan Harte notched a team-high three goals. Senior Grace Curatolo followed closely with four points, scoring two goals and collecting two assists. It was all Denison early on, as the Big Red caught fire by scoring six goals within the first fifteen minutes into the first half of play. Denison carried their run into the final fifteen minutes before the end of the half, adding three goals to complete their 9-0 run.
JCU countered with 6:34 remaining in the first half with their first goal of the half. Curatolo ended the opportunity of Denison gaining an advantage of a double-digit run in the first half, by scoring her 43rd goal of the season on a free position goal. Curatolo's efforts did not stop the Big Red from scoring, as Denison scored two more goals before the break to establish an 11-1 lead at the intermission.
Sophomore goaltender Elyssa Zablo began in net for the Blue and Gold, saving eight of Denison's 25 shots in the first half. Zable was replaced in the second half by senior goalkeeper Megan Sarles. Grombala notched a goal and tagged on an assist out of the break, sparking JCU's second half spurt.
4:19 into the second half, Denison's Liza Farnham ended the Blue Streaks 3-0 run, scoring the Big Red's 12th goal of the evening and increasing the lead to 12-4 in favor of DU. JCU cut the deficit to five goals with 7:33 to go in the second half, as Harte added two of the four goals and Curatolo added two assists during the scoring share.
Denison added one final goal at the 2:56 mark, making the final score 14-8 Big Red. The Blue Streaks finished the game being outshot 30-21, and losing ground balls 16-13. The draw controls were almost nearly matched, as JCU won nine compared to Denison's eight. JCU were effective on defense, causing five turnovers and successfully clearing 15 of 17 their attempts.
The Blue and Gold will continue OAC play on Saturday, hosting the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears at 11 a.m. from Don Shula Stadium.
