Box Score In a pivotal matchup between top two teams in the Ohio Athletic Conference, the Blue Streaks would get a crucial victory.
John Carroll University (9-4, 5-1 OAC) traveled to Ada, Ohio for the third meeting against Ohio Northern University (12-2, 5-1 OAC). JCU would get the win 9-7, which is their third overall, and second road victory over ONU.
The first quarter would be low-scoring. The Polar Bears would alternate goals with Skyler Blake. ONU would score twice, but Blake would score after each of those goals to make it 2-2 after 15 minutes of play. The offense of Ohio Northern would start the scoring in the second quarter. They would score twice before the midpoint of the quarter to give them a 4-2 lead with 8:37 left in the half. However, JCU would have a response. Connor Pike would score over a minute later, and MacGregor Roberts with an assist from Brendan Whitty to tie the game 4-4. Collin Rice would then assist Skyler Blake and Colin Corcoran on their respective goals. JCU ended the quarter with four unanswered goals to give them a 6-4 lead going into halftime.
Jacob Betz started the game, and he made five saves. However, because of penalties, JCU would be down three players to start the second half.
The Blue Streaks' defense would have to step up as the Polar Bears had a 6-on-3 opportunity to begin the third quarter, and they did. They successfully fended off their extra-man opportunity, and Will Good, who entered the game in goal for JCU, made two saves in the effort.
Brendan Whitty would then score after the penalties were released in just under three minutes into the quarter from the assist from Skyler Blake. ONU would score later in the quarter, but JCU would go into the final 15 minutes of play with a 7-5 lead.
In under two minutes into the fourth quarter, Whitty then assisted Colin Corcoran on his goal to extend the lead, but the Polar Bears would score ten seconds later, and then at the 9:43 mark to cut the Blue Streaks lead to 8-7. The defense of JCU would step up once again, as they held ONU scoreless for the remainder of the game. Skyler Blake would add a goal, his fourth of the game, with 20 seconds left with the assist credited to Clayton Karam, who had a team-leading 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers, to give the game its final scoreline.
Blake finished the game with five points to lead the team. Braden Kaib, Tim Donoghue, and Josh Plarr collectively won ten face-offs in 19 opportunities. Will Good would register five saves total in the contest.
John Carroll will close out their regular season schedule with two consecutive home games. The first is on Wednesday, April 25 against Heidelberg at 7:00 PM.
