Chicago And Pittsburgh Will Be Destinations For John Carroll Tennis As NCAA Postseason Play Begins

For the third consecutive year, John Carroll University has both its men's and women's tennis teams entered in NCAA Division III Championship Tournaments.

This time around, the Blue Streak women are heading to Pittsburgh while the Blue Streak men will make a return trip to Chicago.

For the third time in as many years, the John Carroll women have earned the OAC automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament. The Blue Streaks will travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to compete in the first, second and third rounds this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 10-12. 

All matches will be played on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University.

In the first round, played Thursday, May 10, John Carroll (18-6) will face Hope College (13-8) at 1:00 p.m. The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular-season and tournament champions are making their 13th NCAA Tournament appearance and seventh in a row.

Thursday's winner will play fifth-ranked Wesleyan (CT) University in Friday's second semifinal at 1:00 p.m. The winner of Thursday's other first-round game between Kenyon and Wheaton (IL) will face host and ninth ranked Carnegie Mellon in Friday's other semifinal at 10:00 a.m.

The championship match is Saturday at 12 noon.

The regional champion advances to the national championship on Monday-Friday, May 21-26 at The Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California.

John Carroll is 1-2 all-time in NCAA play. In 2016, JCU dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Methodist in the first round played in Lexington, Va. Last year, JCU defeated Concordia (WI) in the opening round before falling to Washington (MO).

The John Carroll men's tennis program is making its fourth consecutive appearance in the national postseason tournament, and will be venturing to the University of Chicago for the second time (also playing there in 2016). The Blue Streaks will be playing in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis first, second and third rounds this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 11-13.

On a neutral court, the Blue Streaks (12-8 on the season) will face Augustana College (18-10) at 1:00 p.m. (CST) on Friday, May 11, at the Stagg Field Tennis Courts. Augustana captured the program's 23rd College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship this past weekend and its first since 1985. This is Augustana's first NCAA championship appearance.
 
The winner of Friday's match will face seventh ranked and host University of Chicago (16-4) on Saturday, May 12 at 10:00 a.m. (CST). In the other side of the bracket, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will face Carnegie Mellon University at 2:00 p.m. (CST).

The two winners from Saturday will compete for the regional championship on Sunday, May 13, at 12:00 noon (CST).


John Carroll is 2-3 all-time in NCAA action, beating Franciscan in the first round of the 2015 tournament and Goucher in the first round of the 2017 postseason.
