After a solid start to the 2018 season, the Blue Streaks were hoping to bring the momentum with them back home.
An outstanding performance by the John Carroll University volleyball team resulted in a three set sweep (25-11, 25-12, 25-15) against the Allegheny College Gators Tuesday night at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center for the Blue Streaks' home opener.
The Blue and Gold set the tone for the match with their effort in the first set, and never allowed the Gators to take the lead at any point during the contest.
"We played extremely well tonight," stated head coach
Michele Benoit. Â "We still have work to do, but all of the pieces continue to fall in the right places for us."
JCU recorded 15 aces as a team to match a season high, and through the first two games, were exceptionally proficient at the net with 24 kills against just seven errors. Superb defense allowed only 15 kills for the visiting Gators.
Freshmen
Cassi Calamunci and
Brooke Hjerpe each contributed a team-high 11 kills for the Blue Streaks. Calamunci had a match attack percentage of .769 (11-1-13), the best mark by a JCU player since Kerry Fox had an .833 performance (10-0-12) vs Blackburn in 2009.
Ally Bartolone and
Rachel Bleile continue to be key assets for John Carroll, with both players recording 13 and 12 assists, respectively. Â Senior
Caitlin Cianciolo continues to achieve career highs as she chipped in seven service aces, which is the highest amount of aces by a Blue Streak player since 2009, when Meredith McDiarmid recorded ten against Sewanee.
With the victory, John Carroll moves to 5-3 on the season. Â Allegheny falls to a 3-7 record.
The Blue Streaks make a quick turnaround and will take on the Redhawks of La Roche College tomorrow at the Baierl Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 7:00 p.m.
