Momentum Stays With The Blue Streaks For Third Consecutive Victory

The John Carroll volleyball team had a quick turn around with its second game in two days as the Blue Streaks traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to take on La Roche College.

Capitalizing on momentum from yesterday's match, the Blue Streaks swept the Redhawks (25-11, 25-17, 25-17) to improve to 6-3 on the season.

The Blue Streaks came out firing once again, a formula they used to perfection Tuesday night against Allegheny, roaring to a 10-4 lead with quick offense and demanding play over the Redhawks. John Carroll ripped off six kills as part of that early run to secure a commanding victory in the first set 25-11.

The Redhawks managed to keep the Blue Streaks within range in the second set, but the Blue Streaks never relinquished the lead and eventually took the frame by a score of 25-17.

Another back-and-forth battle ensued to start the third set, and midway through two teams stood even at 13-13. What started with a service ace by Caitlin Cianciolo became a 9-3 run by the Blue Streaks at a key juncture of the match to pull away to a 22-16 lead.

The Blue and Gold ended the night with a Sarah Calabrese kill to conclude the victory by sweep, taking game three by a 25-17 count.

The Blue Streaks offense was paced by Sarah Calabrese, who finished the match with 14 kills, while Brooke Hjerpe followed with seven. Carleen Ellerbruch and Jenna Dvorsky also chipped in four kills, respectively. Ally Bartolone and Rachel Bleile combined for 23 assists on the night.

On defense, Cianciolo had another dominant performance with 11 digs as she continues to move up the ranks in all time digs.

The Blue Streaks will head to Hiram College this weekend for a tournament in which they will compete in four matches. John Carroll will face Kalamazoo College at 7:30 p.m after opening the weekend with Washington and Jefferson College at 5:30 p.m on Friday. On Saturday, they will play Frostburg State University at 11 a.m followed by Kenyon College at 1 p.m.
