Box Score 4 The John Carroll volleyball team took its talents to Hiram, OH, where they competed in the two-day Hiram Tournament. Fresh off of two consecutive sweeps, the Blue Streaks looked to continue their streak against the Washington and Jefferson College, Kalamazoo College, Frostburg State University, and Kenyon College.
After going point for point with Washington and Jefferson, the Presidents eventually pulled away. The Blue Streaks fell in three sets (20-25, 26-28, 17-25). Category leaders for John Carroll are
Cassi Calamunci with 11 kills, followed by
Sarah Calabrese and
Brooke Hjerpe, each contributing nine and eight kills, respectively.
Caitlin Cianciolo supplied 14 digs and Hjerpe added nine digs, as well.
Although the Hornets were not an easy opponent for the Blue Streaks, John Carroll managed to pull through in a five-set decision. Calamunci, Calabrese, and Hjerpe once again led the team in kills, tacking on 15, 13, and 12 kills. The defense was led by Cianciolo,
Ally Bartolone, and
Sarah Calabrese, who together racked up 51 digs.
On Saturday, the Blue Streaks were quick to take the momentum against Frostburg, maintaining the lead the entire match. With the score 16-12, John Carroll went on a 9-2 scoring run to end the match to give the Blue Streak the 1-0 lead.
Sets two and three were more of the same. With the point difference close in the beginning, the Blue Streak offense would use their momentum to shut down the Bobcats and take the victory (25-24, 25-15, 25-13).
Calamunci and Calabrese finished the match tying for the team high in kills (9), while
Carleen Ellerbruch followed with six and Hjerpe added five. Bartolone and
Rachel Bleile both finished in the double digits for assists, tallying 20 and 11.
On defense, Hjerpe and Cianciolo led the Blue Streaks with eight and six digs, respectively. The duo also stood out in serving, with each tacking on three aces over the duration of the match.
The final win of the weekend was nothing short of difficult for the Blue Streaks. After exchanging wins in the first four sets, John Carroll prevailed in the deciding set to take the match away from the Ladies (25-20, 28-26, 27-25, 25-20, 15-11).
The Blue Streak offense continued to be led by Calabrese and Calamunci, who combined for 41 kills in the match. Hjerpe also was a key contributor, chipping in 16.
In the back row, Cianciolo finished the match with a team-high 40 digs. Bartolone, Hjerpe, and Calabrese also tallied 50 kills collectively. Bartolone also led the team in assists with 33.
John Carroll will next host the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday, September 18. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
