Heading into day two of the Case Western Reserve University tournament, John Carroll was set to play the Terriers of Hiram College and the Pomeroys of Saint Mary of the Woods College. Tough competition lead to the Blue Streaks splitting today's matches, falling to Hiram (14-25, 15-25, 22-25) and defeating Saint Mary of the Woods (25-22, 24-26, 29-27, 25-16).
A slow start for the Blue and Gold against the Terriers proved injurious to securing a victory. Â Category leaders for the Blue and Gold were freshman
Emma Abfall with 8 kills,
Ally Bartolone with 10 assists, and
Caitlin Cianciolo with 17 digs. Â Freshman
Brooke Hjerpe also contributed five kills and 11 digs.
After a quick break, John Carroll entered into their second match of the day. Â Fierce competition between the Blue Streaks and the Pomeroys caused for each set to go point for point. Â
Brooke Hjerpe,
Sarah Calabrese, and
Cassi Calamunci each recorded 22 kills for the weekend. Cianciolo chipped in another 35 digs, a career high. Â Hjerpe also provided an additional 19 digs.
After winning by two points in the first and third sets, the Blue Streaks gained some momentum in the fourth to win 25-16. Â The set started off in favor of Saint Mary of the Woods, with the Pomeroys going on a 6-0 scoring run. Both teams exchanged a point before the Blue Streaks answered back with a 6-0 run of their own, making the score 7-7. Â Another 7-0 run by the Blue and Gold proved fatal to the Pomeroys, as John Carroll led for the remainder of the match.
Abfall was named to the all-tournament team for her performance this weekend. Â The outside hitter recorded 15 kills for the weekend.
With the results of this tournament, John Carroll moves to 4-3 overall. Â The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Tuesday, September 11 when they take on Allegheny College in their home opener at 7:30 P.M. Â Â
