John Carroll Volleyball Rallies From Two Sets Down To Shock Geneva

If John Carroll wanted to author a script on how best to carry momentum into Ohio Athletic Conference play, they did so Wednesday evening.

Trailing by two sets against host Geneva, the Blue Streaks rattled off victories in three straight games to secure their eighth consecutive win of the season.

It was John Carroll's first win from two games down since October 13, 2018, when the Blue Streaks beat Oberlin, also on the road, 21-25,17-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-3

The 3-2 win over the Golden Tornadoes puts the finishing touches on an impressive 15-3 record that the Blue and Gold will ride into Ohio Athletic Conference play.

The Geneva Golden Tornadoes (14-4), who brought their own eight-match winning streak into tonight's battle, swirled with a 25-21 victory in the opening set and then prevailed in a come-from-behind 26-24 win in the second set to go up 2-0. The Blue Streaks came out strong in the second set, going ahead 10-1, but the host squad responded to even the game at 18 points apiece, and eventually secured the second set by outscoring JCU, 8-6.

John Carroll responded to win the next two sets to force a deciding fifth.

The Blue Streaks led in the final frame most of the way, but the Golden Tornadoes had one last gasp, coming back from 14-9 to win four consecutive points. An attack error, however, delivered the winning point for the Blue Streaks, taking a 15-13 triumph.

Junior Sarah Calabrese and sophomore Cassi Calamunci each registered 15 kills to pace the offense, with sophomore Ally Bartolone tallying 41 assists. Brooke Hjerpe had 11 kills and a team-best 18 digs.

John Carroll has Muskingum next in the OAC opener. The Fighting Muskies are no pushover, as they pose a 14-2 record. That game will take place on Saturday in New Concord.
