John Carroll suffered its second Ohio Athletic Conference loss of the season Tuesday night, falling in four sets (20-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-20) against rival Mount Union Purple Raiders in Alliance.
The first set was neck and neck in the beginning, until a little past the halfway point when Mount Union pulled away with a six-point run to make the score, 19-10.Â
The Blue Streaks answered by closing to within three at 20-17, but that wasn't enough to win set one.Â
After dropping the first set, the Blue Streaks bounced back in the second set, starting out with an outstanding block by Casssi Calamunci and
Ava Nice. That helped the Blue Streaks start out with a 5-1 lead.Â
John Carroll kept building off the momentum and lead the set 14-8 midway through and went on to finish victorious by a score of 25-18.Â
In a very tight third set, Mount Union looked to get a mini break and took a 22-19 advantage, but JCU responded and tied the game at 24-24.

The Raiders, however, came out on top with a two point advantage, winning the third set 26-24, with the final point courtesy from a kill by Chase Flilicko
In the fourth and arguably most critical set for both teams, things started to heat up when Mount Union forced John Carroll to take a timeout after the Purple Raiders took a 12-11 lead

Mount Union kept on rolling after the timeout, making the score 16-11 which stemmed from multiple errors on the Blue Streaks defense.Â
JCU closed to within two points on three occasions, but could not make up the ground necessary to force a fifth game. The Purple Raiders went on to win the set four 25-20 and take the match in four sets.Â
Leaders for John Carroll's offense in tonight's match were
Cassi Calamunci with 12 kills followed by
Sarah Calabrese and
Brooke Hjerpe with nine kills each.Â
On the defensive side,
Anna Coughlin lead the Blue Streaks with 17 digs Calamunci followed with 12 digs, and right behind her was Calabrese with 11 digs on the night.Â
