For the first time in her career, senior
Lauren O'Malley advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships, hosted by Kalamazoo College at Sorensen Courts and Stowe Stadium.
This is the third consecutive season that O'Malley made an appearance in the tournament. However, the furthest she ever went in either of the prior two campaigns was the round of 16.
Entering the day seeded sixth, O'Malley first started in the round of 32, where he faced Christopher Newport's Johanna Ranta-aho. She rose to the occasion, defeating Ranta-aho 6-3 6-1 to advance to the round of 16.
As a result of the win, O'Malley earned the title of All-American for the third consecutive season.
The weather took its toll for the round of 16 matches. Rain caused the matches prior to O'Malley's to be delayed, resulting in her match against Southwestern's Mary Cardone to be pushed back nearly three hours.
The wait did not affect O'Malley, however, as she cruised past Cardone to win the match in straight sets for the second time of the day (6-1, 6-0). Â Â Â Â
O'Malley will next face #1 seed Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico of Emory tomorrow, May 25, at 9 a.m.
