Blue Streaks Rise To The Occasion Defensively In Second Half To Subdue Otterbein

There are many statistics that will stand out from tonight's game between John Carroll and Otterbein.

Many will notice the near triple double turned in by John Carroll's Olivia Nagy, who finished the evening with 22 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocked shots.

Others may notice John Carroll's 0-8 shooting from long range over the course of 40 minutes.

But only a coach will truly appreciate the five points surrendered by the Blue Streaks in the third quarter, which helped erase Otterbein's halftime lead and spurred the home squad to a 60-52 victory on Wednesday at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Otterbein held a 29-25 advantage after the opening half of play, but John Carroll used a 10-0 run to turn the tables. The run was keyed by six points from Dani Carlson, who had been held to just two points in the opening 20 minutes. The Cardinals managed just five points in the third period against the stifling JCU defense, but three of them came as time expired to cut the Blue Streaks' lead to 36-34 entering the final quarter.

The Blue and Gold tried to pull away in the fourth, but back-to-back three-point field goals by Jenna Hoschouer and Hailey Bauer reduced the John Carroll lead to 47-46 with 4:43 remaining.

But John Carroll had one last burst, an 8-0 run that featured baskets by Nicole Heffington and Nagy, and perfect free throw shooting from Gabrielle Gevaudan and Abby Adler, that salted the game away.

Abby Zerkle (five points) and Delaney Cutteridge (four points) helped the visitors establish an 11-7 lead after one quarter. The lead would change hands five times in the second, with Otterbein closing the period on a 7-3 run that was capped by three consecutive free throws by Hoschouer when JCU fouled her as the buzzer sounded on a three attempt.

John Carroll (10-2, 4-1 OAC), which won its 19th consecutive home game, was paced by Nagy's outstanding performance, with the 19 rebounds being a career high for the sophomore. Carlson added 13 points (11 in the second half), and Adler had eight rebounds and two blocks.

Zerkle's 14 points and Hoschouer's ten led Otterbein (9-3, 4-1 OAC), which suffered its first loss in league play.

John Carroll won the rebounding battle, 44-29.
