OAC Unveils Award in Honor of Chris Wenzler '90

| By:
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio -- How do you honor a legend? How do you memorialize a one-of-a-kind human being who impacted the lives of thousands through his life's work? Living like he did is a start.

The Ohio Athletic Conference has announced a new award in honor of the late Chris Wenzler '90, to be given to a student sports information assistant in the OAC who embodies the values Chris possessed and modeled at John Carroll University.

From 1990 until his brave battle with cancer ended in June 2020, Wenzler was the face of the JCU Sports Information Department. As sports information director and as the school's first assistant athletic director for communications, Wenzler ran an outstanding sports information department built upon a family atmosphere. Wenzler pioneered live broadcasting, employed and mentored a large staff of student assistants, and served as a leader in the Division III sports information world.

But more important than his accomplishments, "Boss Man" helped to launch the careers of so many Blue Streaks in sports information, communications, and plenty of other fields. With his kind spirit and a guiding hand, Wenzler provided a perfect example of a Man for Others and a Man of Carroll.

Each year, the Wenzler Award will honor one student sports information assistant who possesses a similar spirit. The award will recognize a student who demonstrates an above-and-beyond work ethic, leadership, and service. Although only one student will win the award, we can all live our lives as he did, working hard and treating others well.
