UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A former member of the John Carroll University Women's Basketball program is making her mark as a rising star in local journalism.

Following a successful stint with The Toledo Blade, Ashley Bastock '15 has been hired by the Akron Beacon Journal.

Bastock is a familiar name to dedicated fans of the JCU Women's Basketball team. A 3-year member of the Blue Streaks, the 6'0 forward appeared as a reserve for JCU on many occasions. During her junior season, the Blue Streaks captured the first OAC Championship in program history. The Blue Streaks won the regular season title with a 88-65 win over Marietta on February 22, 2014, which led to an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, another first for the Blue Streaks.

Always a dedicated student, Bastock earned Academic All-OAC accolades twice in 2012-13 and 2013-14. A Communications major with minors in English and Political Science, Bastock starred as a journalist for The Carroll News, as well as a broadcaster for WJCU and JCU TV-4. Over her four years, she interned with CBS Radio, WJW Fox 8, WOIO, and NBC News.

Following her graduation in 2015, Bastock headed to Washington, DC as the Tim Russert Meet the Press Fellow. Following nearly a year and a half at Meet the Press, Bastock served as a freelance writer at a number of sites, including SB Nation (Fear the Sword covering the Cavaliers, and Swish Appeal covering the WNBA and NCAA women's basketball), Sports Business Journal, the Associated Press, and NEO Sports Insiders.

In September 2018, Bastock was hired by the Toledo Blade as a beat reporter. Assigned to the University of Michigan beat, Bastock covered football and men's basketball, among other sports.

Following a happy two-and-a-half years covering the Wolverines, Bastock now returns to Northeast Ohio to work as a sports reporter for The Beacon Journal.

"When I heard the news about Ashley starting at the Beacon Journal, I can honestly say I was not surprised," said former teammate Beth Andrews '15, now the head coach of JCU Women's Basketball. "Ashley had these goals when I met her back in 2010 and she never strayed from them. We as a JCU Women Basketball family, are excited, proud, and wish her the best of luck!"
