All good things come to an end.
And after just one made free throw, the 23-game win streak at the DeCarlo Varsity Center ended for John Carroll University women's basketball team.
JCU, coming off a tough loss against No. 12 Baldwin Wallace, looked to take advantage of their home court and a bounce back with a win. But for the first time in 24 games, the John Carroll Blue Streaks (19-4, 13-3 OAC) lost at home as the Ohio Northern Polar Bears (17-6, 11-5 OAC) won a tough 59-58 battle.
Ohio Northern managed to strike first in the contest, scoring the first five points. The Blue Streaks managed to respond by going on a 11-2 run to take their first lead of the game and build on it up to the six-minute mark. After Ohio Northern cut the lead to one, John Carroll went on another run, this time a 6-0 run, to build their lead up once again. However, Ohio Northern went on a run of their own, cutting John Carroll's lead once again to one to end the first quarter down 19-18.
The second quarter opened with a defensive struggle between the two teams, as they combined five points by the four minute point of the quarter. The Blue Streaks found it especially difficult to break through the Ohio Northern defense as they failed to make a field goal until they were 6:30 minutes into the quarter, giving them the lead back. However, the Blue and Gold failed to get another point in the quarter as the Polar Bears closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 30-23 lead.
At the half,
Olivia Nagy led the way for the Blue Streaks offensively, scoring 9 points on 4-of-9 shooting to go with her three rebounds and three blocks. For Ohio Northern, Jaclyn Yankle led the Polar Bears with nine points, all of them coming from outside the 3-point line. John Carroll struggles offensively were apparent on the stat sheet as they shot 25.8% from the field, including 25% from 3-point range, while Ohio Northern shot 36.4% from the field, including 28.6% from 3.
John Carroll came out of the locker room and cut the lead to two on multiple occasions but could not get much closer as Ohio Northern refused to back down. Finally, threes by
Dani Carlson and
Abby Adler gave the Blue Streaks their first lead since the midway point in the second quarter and forced a Polar Bear timeout with three minutes left in the quarter. A layup in transition for
Gabrielle Gevaudan capped an 8-0 run for the Blue Streaks and after one last Ohio Northern three, the Blue Streaks ended the third quarter with a 40-39 lead.
After both teams had a slow start to the final quarter in regulation, the period quickly turned into a back and forth affair as the teams traded buckets. It stayed that way until back-to-back jumpers from the Polar Bears Emily Mescher gave Ohio Northern the lead and forced a John Carroll timeout. Following the stop in action, Ohio Northern and John Carroll went back to trading scores until layups by Nagy and Adler cut the Blue Streaks deficit to one and caused Coach Morrone to call another timeout with just over two minutes left in regulation.
Ohio Northern made a jumper to bring the lead to three and were able to fend off the Blue Streaks until
Nicole Heffington made a short jumper in the lane with 30 seconds left, forcing Ohio Northern to call a timeout with 22 seconds left. Two fouls by John Carroll forced Ohio Northern to the free throw line where Abby Weeks made both free throws to bring the lead back up to three.
Coming out of a timeout by John Carroll, Gevaudan was able to draw a foul while shooting a three and was able to knock down all three of her free throws to tie the game with 7.4 seconds left. However, on the ensuing possession,
Olivia Nagy was called for the foul with 2.3 seconds left and Weeks made her second free throw to take the lead. With no timeouts left, Adler was forced to travel the full court and make a last second heave which did not fall, giving the Polar Bears the win.
Leading the way for the Blue Streaks on offense was Nagy, who scored 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and eight blocks. Other double-digit scorers included Adler with 14 points and Heffington with 11 points. For Ohio Northern, Mescher led the way with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds while Jaclyn Yankle scored 11. John Carroll shot 35% from the floor, including 33.3% from the 3-point line while Ohio Northern shot 37.9% from the field, including 35% from three. John Carroll was also out-rebounded 39-38 in the contest.
