For the first time in program history, John Carroll has a national wrestler of the week as awarded by d3wrestle.com
Junior
Sammy Gross won the national division three wrestler of the week award for his efforts during the week of January 22-28, 2020. Gross also received the Ohio Athletic Conference wrestler of the week for his efforts during that span of time.
The week started with a win over then #10 ranked Dalton Leightner from Baldwin-Wallace by a score of 7-3.
Gross continued his dominance at the OAC quad match. He quickly picked up a 11-7 victory over Shaun Wagner of Ohio Northern, but that wasn't the most impressive win of the day.
Facing the #5 ranked wrestler in the nation and the returning national runner up, Antwon Pugh of Mount Union, Gross displayed his power and skill. Once Pugh got up early in the first couple periods, Gross made a third period comeback to tie the match. Gross was in complete control in the third period, doing whatever he pleased and it continued in overtime. It would take just 17 seconds until Gross would pin Pugh in overtime, cementing him as a viable national championship contender.
Gross was 22-6 on the year following his award-winning week. He spent the first half of the season at 165 and dropped to 157. Among his season highlights was a third place finish at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open, a title at the Trine Invitational, a runner-up sowing at the RIT Invitational and another third place effort at the Citrus Invitational. Gross finished 3rd at the 2019 Central Regional at 165 lbs. to earn his first trip to the NCAA Championships last season.Â
