Women's Basketball Dominates OT to Vanquish Mount Union at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Don't count out Nicole Heffington and the John Carroll University Women's Basketball Team.

Led by a 23-point performance- from Heffington, the Blue Streaks weathered the storm in overtime to defeat the Mount Union Purple Raiders, 83-73, at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

John Carroll improves to 3-0 under Beth Andrews in her first season as head coach. The Blue and Gold will see the same Mount Union team tomorrow night at The McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

"I am very proud of the confidence and composure they had in themselves in that final stretch," Andrews said. "It's easy to tense up and get the game over with. They really showed maturity in those moments."

From the 2:48 mark in the first quarter on, the Blue Streaks held the lead. Until they didn't.

With 20 seconds remaining, Mount Union stormed ahead 64-61 and had momentum working in their favor. Then, Heffington poured in a 3-pointer that kept the Blue Streaks' undefeated season alive.

"I had no doubt that was going in," Andrews said. "I am very confident in all of our shooters. They can all be scorers. If they know we need a score, they have the confidence they can."

Heffington, the reigning D3Hoops.com first-team forward from this past week, also added five rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Through the first 1:07 of the overtime period, the Blue Streaks struck lightning with a 7-0 run that left little doubt. The Purple Raiders thundered back with a 4-0 run of their own, that cut JCU's lead 71-68.

Then, Hannah Bouchy and Abby Adler each added a pair of free throws that secured the victory. Adler went 8-for-8 from the free throw line, scoring eight of her 11 points in extra time.

"That's focus, maturity and senior leadership," Andrews said of Adler's free throw makes. "That was securing a win right there."

The Blue Streaks outscored Mount Union 19-9 in overtime; 12 of JCU's points came from the free throw line.

"We say, just to catch and secure the ball because you know the foul is coming. They were able to pass through it a little bit prior to being fouled," Andrews said. "At the end of the day it's just stepping up to the line, zoning in and hitting the shot."

In the first 9:50 of the game, neither team led by more than three points with a total of six lead changes. Finally, a pair of free throws by Jaylen Hoffman pulled JCU ahead 17-13

The Blue Streaks wasted no time in the second quarter to make their mark.

Hannah Bouchy drained back-to-back threes which increased the John Carroll lead to 23-16. Over the next five minutes, Mount Union worked its way within two points of the lead.

Bouchy finished with 10 points.

The Blue and Gold struck an 11-0 run over the final 3:04 to close out the half. Four different Blue Streaks scored points, as JCU led 40-27 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Purple Raiders inched their way towards the lead and outscored the Blue Streaks 16-14.

Once the fourth quarter rolled in, Mount Union caught a gust of wind and outpaced JCU 21-10 to even the game.

But in overtime, the Blue Streaks defense forced three steals and a block by junior Olivia Nagy left the Purple Raiders with no answer.

With Nagy's block she surpassed Caitlin Sureck for career blocks at John Carroll, successfully swatting 193 shots in just 50 career games.

"Liv is a huge presence in the paint. It takes pressure off of our other people," Andrews said. "It's a huge accomplishment and I am proud of the impact she's made on our program."

Nagy tabbed nine points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Senior Dani Carlson helped the Blue and Gold with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Blue Streaks will face off with the Purple Raiders in Alliance at 6:30 pm on Saturday.
