Volleyball Fights Hard But Falls to Otterbein at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- John Carroll University Volleyball headed into Wednesday evening's match with momentum, having won three of their last four matches. Otterbein also carried in plenty of energy, entering with a 16-2 overall record, undefeated in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Otterbein had extra motivation, with Head Coach Monica Wright searching for her 300th OAC victory.

Following a fierce fight, the Cardinals emerged with the win, helping Wright become just the ninth coach in OAC history to get to 300 victories. Otterbein secured a 3-set win: 25-14, 25-21, 25-22.

Set 1
The first set was back and forth for the first couple of points, and then Otterbein pushed ahead to 8-5. Then, the Cardinals rolled to a 10-point run to stretch their lead to 18-5.

A great diving stop from Anna Coughlin kept the Blue Streaks in the battle, as she stopped the Cardinals from extending their run any further. The Blue Streaks won the next three points after a strategic timeout to make it 18-8. Head Coach Michele Benoit's timeout helped, as it injected some life into the Blue Streaks after letting up 10 straight points.

Ally Bartlone subbed back in at 19-9 and won two straight points to make it 19-11. The Blue Streaks allowed a point but then battled back for three more straight points. The first set was all about runs by both teams. The Blue Streaks had two 3-point runs of their own while Otterbein's 10-point run defined the set, as the Blue Streaks lost the first set, 14-25. Cassie Calmunci led the way with 3 kills for the Blue Streaks while Morgan Hartman had 5 kills for Otterbien.

Set 2
The second set was all about runs, too, as Otterbein took the first three points of the set, but then Calmunci came back with an absolute strike to put the Blue Streaks on the scoreboard. Otterbein battled back and had another run as they had four consecutive points after the Blue Streaks came within one point at 3-2. The Blue Streaks got it within 3 when the score was 11-8. Then Otterbein pulled away making it 13-8.

The Blue Streaks closed the gap to one at 13-12. Then, Otterbein took a timeout of their own, and then scored three straight points after the break. The Blue Streaks battled back to within three, trailing 20-17. The Blue Streaks lost the next two points, which saw them trailing by five with a score of 22-17, and then Coach Benoit took a timeout to try and swing momentum back in their favour.

It was a great choice, as the Blue Streaks won the first point back in from the timeout. The Blue Streaks battled in the second set scoring 21, but Otterbein managed to hang on for the win.

Set 3
The Blue Streaks started off the third set well, taking a 2-1 lead. It was back-and-forth through the first thirty points, as it was all tied up at 15-15, a real teeter-totter of a set. Neither team was able to pull away from one another, as it was a well-played set.

With the score deadlocked at 15-all, Otterbein scored two points to go up 17-15. John Carroll took a strategic timeout to slow down the momentum of the Cardinals. It was a smart timeout indeed, as JCU scored the next two points coming out of the timeout to tie it up at 17-17.

Otterbein took the next two points to go up 19-17. But JCU battled back and prevented a run, as Calamunci won the next point for the Blue Streaks, making it 19-18. Otterbein won the next two out of three to make the score 21-19.

After Otterbein went up 22-19, JCU took another timeout. The Blue Streaks scored the first point out of the timeout to make things 22-20, but then dropped the next two points, going down 24-20.

JCU scored two points in a row to stave off the end for a moment, but Otterbein eventually got the point it needed for a 25-22 win.

With the victory, Otterbein's Coach Wright secured her 300th win, to the applause of the assembled Cardinals fans.

For the match, Calamunci led the team with 15 kills. Ally Bartolone registered 14 assists, while Maddie Maziarz accrued 9. Bartolone also led the team with 10 digs, while Anna Coughlin and Lexi MacDonald each notched nine.

The Blue Streaks now regroup before the weekend. John Carroll will travel to Ada to take on Ohio Northern this Saturday, October 16 at 1 pm. The Polar Bears are ranked No. 14 in Division III in the latest AVCA poll.
