Volleyball Completes Elmhurst Tournament with Authoritative Win over Alma

ELMHURST, Ill. -- This weekend's trip to Chicago proved to be a big success for John Carroll University Volleyball.

Following a narrow opening loss to Coe in Friday's opener, JCU bested Augustana in the second match on Friday. On Saturday, the Blue Streaks finished off the weekend with a conquest of Alma College.

The Blue Streaks stormed past Alma in a 3-0 sweep to complete the Elmhurst Tournament. John Carroll earned the victory, 25-20, 25-16, 25-16.

Set 1
The Blue Streaks and Scots opened evenly before Alma found momentum with a 4-point run. But then JCU battled back with a 7-1 run, with a Lexi MacDonald ace leading Alma to call a timeout with JCU ahead 15-14.

Kailee Herbst notched back-to-back kills, leading the Scots to burn their final timeout as JCU led, 20-17. Down the stretch, the Blue Streaks got kills from four different players to finish off the Scots, 25-20.

Set 2
The Blue Streaks and Scots traded blows before the University Heights squad started to gain traction. After JCU grabbed an 11-10 lead after a couple nice plays, Alma called a timeout to regroup.

The Blue Streaks came roaring out of the break, collecting 7 straight points. Brooke Hjerpe tabbed a couple of kills to help push the Blue and Gold ahead, 18-11. Alma stopped the bleeding with a point, but then JCU got back to dominating.

Jillian Kellick, Cassi Calamunci, and Brooke Hjerpe all helped the Blue Streaks fire for a 5-point run, extending the lead to 23-12.

Alma extended the set, but the Blue Streaks took care of business in the end with a 25-16 conquest.

Set 3
Head Coach Michele Benoit's squad came out firing again in the third set, but Alma provided counterattacks, keeping it within two at 11-9.

But then the Blue Streaks got things rolling with a 3-point run to 14-10, leading to a timeout by the Scots.

John Carroll didn't let up after the respite. Jillian Kellick played particularly well, earning a pair of important kills to keep the Blue Streaks in the driver's seat.

A few errors late by Alma allowed the Blue Streaks to finish things off. The Blue and Gold earned a convincing 25-16 win to clinch the set.

Looking at the stats, Herbst and Calamunci led the way with a combined 22 kills. Ally Bartolone did great work as always with 36 assists. Defensively, MacDonald led the team with 8 digs, with Calamunci close behind with seven.

With the win, JCU advances to 9-11 on the year. Benoit's squad is back in action on Wednesday, heading to Alliance to face off with Mount Union.
