Volleyball Stumbles on the Road at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Despite a great early effort, John Carroll University Volleyball could not emerge from Alliance with a victory.

The Blue Streaks surrendered a 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 23-25 match to Mount Union on the road on Wednesday evening.

John Carroll conquered the first set, but came a few points short here and there to miss out a chance to earn the team's first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the year.

Set 1
The Blue Streaks got off the bus with fire, roaring to a strong start against the Purple Raiders.

Head Coach Michele Benoit's squad burst out of the gate, rolling to a 15-10 lead. JCU forced attack errors and tallied a pair of service aces to push the lead to 19-12, leading to a Mount Union timeout.

Out of the break, the Blue Streaks finalized the opening conquest. Brooke Hjerpe, Cassi Calamunci, and Kailee Herbst all authored kills to secure a 25-20 win.

Set 2
Mount Union played more effectively as the second set began. The Purple Raiders took a modest lead before the Blue Streaks stormed back to knot it at nine. A Cassei Calamunci kill pushed JCU ahead 11-9, leading to a Mount Union timeout.

After the break, the Purple Raiders galloped to a 19-12 advantage. JCU burned a timeout looking to get back into it.

In the end, though, Mount Union kept the pedal to the metal to earn the 25-20 set two victory.

Set 3
Mount Union's front row continued to impress in the third set, playing an impeccable game. With a .196 hitting percentage, the Purple Raiders looked strong.

In addition, the hosts benefited from seven attack errors by the Blue Streaks. Despite this, it was a close set the whole way. But in the end, three service aces for Mount Union proved to be decisive as well, as the Blue Streaks suffered a 25-22 defeat.

Set 4
With matchpoint not far away, the Purple Raiders looked to finish things out in the fourth set. The teams played quite evenly, though, as JCU pushed forward on offense.

The score stood at 18-17 Mount Union when the Purple Raiders elected to take a timeout. The hosts pushed ahead from there, moving to a 24-21 advantage.

But John Carroll was not done. The Blue Streaks tallied two straight points to pull back in from the brink. Mount Union called a timeout to regroup, and the tactic worked, as the Purple Raiders won the final point to earn the 25-23 win.

With the defeat, the Blue Streaks drop to 9-12 on the season, and 0-2 in OAC play.

For the match, Calamunci led the team with 18 kills, while Herbst notched 12. Ally Bartolone did nice work with 34 assists and 12 digs. Lexi MacDonald tallied a team-best 34 digs, with Calamunci earning 16, as well. Jessica Liddle had a nice match with 5 kills and 8 digs as well, with a .188 hitting percentage.
