Women's Basketball Fights Tooth and Nail for Home Win over Albion

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The John Carroll University Women's Basketball team remains undefeated after a hard-fought battle against Albion College, 75-66.

Both teams came into the matchup undefeated, as the Britons dominated the Trine University Classic with victories over Denison University and Kenyon College, and then defeated Heidelberg University.

A strong defensive effort from both teams contributed to the back-and-forth battle in the first quarter. Nicole Heffington and Oliva Nagy fueled the JCU offense, as Nagy ended the quarter with four points and Heffington finished with five.

With little time left in the first, Heffington hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one heading into the second quarter, 14-13.

Heffington would be the spark on offense for the remainder of the contest, finishing with 26 points.

The energy created late in the first quarter carried over, as the Blue Streaks found two quick baskets to start the second. But this was countered by Albion's hard-nosed style of play. An ample amount of defensive stops and an aerial attack from the 3-point line helped the Britons maintain their lead heading into the second half, 31-28.

The trading of baskets would resume into the third quarter with both teams showing no signs of letting up.

Both the Blue Streaks and the Britons unleashed a surge of offense that was not displayed earlier in the affair. But the tides began to turn when Heffington converted an and one that gave JCU its first lead.

However, this lead disappeared with a last-second layup from Becca Ross to tie the game at 53 heading into the fourth quarter.

JCU came out of the huddle oozing with offense, as Heffington dominated the Albion defense late while Sarah Balfour provided lockdown defense late in the fourth.

The sudden burst of offense quickly put the Britons away, leading the Blue Streaks to a 75-66 victory.

Along with Heffington's 26-point game, Nagy recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while forward Gabrielle Gevaudan ended the contest with 13 points.

The Blue Streaks will host Denison University in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, November 23.
