CLEVELAND, Ohio -- On Wednesday, November 3, John Carroll University junior Logan Potosky was officially awarded the 2021 Fred McLeod Memorial Scholarship from the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters.

A 3-year veteran of the John Carroll University Sports Information Department, Potosky is a Wenzler Warrior, and very deserving of the tremendous honor.

Potosky is very grateful for this achievement.

"It truly means a lot to me. Fred was someone in my life who I looked up to as a kid," said Potosky. "Watching him call Cavs games and how much fun he made them was one of the reasons I wanted to get into sports broadcasting. To even be mentioned in the same sentence as him is a tremendous honor."

The Kirtland, Ohio native currently attends John Carroll University in pursuit of a degree in Communication, with a concentration in Digital Media, and a minor in Entrepreneurship. He is currently the Sports Director of WJCU 88.7 FM, while also serving as an undergraduate assistant for the John Carroll Sports Information Department.

As an aspiring play-by-play sports broadcaster, he is the play-by-play voice of the John Carroll Blue Streaks football team on WJCU, as well as of his high school alma mater's football team, the six-time OHSAA State Champion Kirtland Hornets.

His brother, Luke Potosky, works with him for both the JCU Sports Information Department and the Kirtland Hornet Stat Crew, and has enjoyed their time together in sports media.

"It's been awesome to be part of and remain active in both the Kirtland and John Carroll communities. It's just been amazing watching Logan's career progress as much as it has so far," Luke said.

His boss for JCU Sports Information, Joe Ginley, is grateful for what Potosky has done for the department over the past three years.

"Logan is a dedicated Wenzler Warrior. His passion for broadcasting and Sports Information is unmatched," said Ginley. "I know Chris Wenzler is smiling down on Logan. This is a well-deserved award."

For the JCU Sports Information Department, he performs many duties, including play-by-play and public address announcing for sporting events, preparing game notes, and writing stories. His brother realized early on that Logan wanted to become a play-by-play sports broadcaster.

"When we played video games growing up, we would always turn down the commentary, and Logan would do his own call of the game," Luke said. "That was when my parents and I knew he had a gift and passion for sports broadcasting".

In the winter, he hopes to call John Carroll Blue Streaks basketball for both WJCU and the JCU Sports Information Department.

Outside of his education, Potosky has also done some work for the Lake County Captains, the High-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians.

"I was able to produce some of their broadcasts this summer and fall. It really helped me gain a greater understanding of the sports broadcasting field, especially behind the scenes, and I am grateful to have had this opportunity."

He is also a member of the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America.

One person Potosky thanks for his success is the late Chris Wenzler '90, his first boss for JCU Sports Information, who passed away in June 2020 after a battle with multiple myeloma.

"Chris gave me my first-ever chance to be a play-by-play sports broadcaster for a football game against Wilmington in 2019, which I got to call with my brother. Since then, I have been able to improve my craft. Without Chris, I would not be where I am today."

Luke certainly thinks that Chris was also grateful for Logan's help with the JCU Sports Information Department.

"Chris Wenzler would definitely say Logan is a 'Man for Others' and a 'Man of Carroll.'"

If people desire to listen to Logan's broadcasting voice and play-by-play commentary, tune into WJCU 88.7 FM on Saturday, November 6, when John Carroll Football travels to Tiffin to face the Heidelberg Student Princes. He will also be calling the game with his brother.

"We got to call the Marietta game together this year, which was really fun. I'm looking forward to another great broadcast."

The Cleveland Association of Broadcasters also awarded fellow JCU junior Taylor Anthony with a scholarship. A feature story on Taylor will be posted in the coming days.
