Second Quarter Spark and Nagy’s Double-Double Lead Women's Basketball to Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The double-double has been a common occurrence in the career of John Carroll center Olivia Nagy. But this one on Saturday afternoon was truly remarkable.

The senior, who totaled 12 points, 19 rebounds, and a block, tied her previous season-high of 17 rebounds in the first half alone, as she helped lead No. 4 John Carroll Women's Basketball (7-0, 3-0 OAC) to a commanding 73-55 victory over Capital (2-7, 0-3 OAC) at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

In a low-scoring, tightly contested first quarter, the Blue and Gold held the lead for most of the time. However, the Comets were able to tie the score at 12-12 through one.

But in the second quarter, the Blue Streaks re-took the lead and never looked back. John Carroll grabbed the momentum early with a pair of Nicole Heffington buckets to start the period. Some stifling defense and consistent scoring led the Blue and Gold to a 14-0 run and a 26-12 lead with 3:21 remaining in the first half.

"We knew going into the second quarter that we hadn't found our offensive vibe yet," Head Coach Beth Andrews '15 said. "We finally found those open windows and we were able to knock down some shots."

While a Capital layup ended the run, the Blue Streaks continued to add to their lead, thanks to two consecutive three-pointers from Sarah Balfour to end the quarter. After outscoring the Comets 22-3 in the second, John Carroll led 34-15 at halftime.

"In the second quarter, I think our defense was a lot more aggressive," Nagy said. "Our guards were getting up on the switches, we weren't letting them [Capital] inside. We held them to three points, so that was a really big emphasis for us."

The second half saw the Blue and Gold lead by as many as 27 points, with many reserves seeing plenty of minutes. While Capital was able to outscore the Blue Streaks 40-39 in the second half, it wasn't nearly enough, as John Carroll sealed an almost wire-to-wire victory.

Some other notable performances from the Blue and Gold came from graduate student Nicole Heffington (10 points, nine rebounds, and four assists), junior Kaelyn Underwood, who scored a game-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench, and freshman Olivia Giunta, who scored a career-high eight points off the bench.

On a different note, it wasn't just her team's play that impressed Andrews. She had a very special guest coach with her on the bench in the form of John Carroll University President Al Miciak.

"He was very excited," Andrews said. "He was constantly asking about what we were looking for and what adjustments we were going to make, so he was very involved. I think that it was a really fun time having him. He's 1-0."

Up next, the Blue Streaks will host Marietta on Saturday, December 18 at 2:00 pm at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, before playing two non-conference games in Kentucky the following week.

"It's going to be a very big weekend for us," Andrews said. It's going to be a huge turning point hopefully for the season."
