Women's Basketball's 17-Game Home Win Streak Ends vs. Marietta

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A pair of lengthy streaks came to an end for John Carroll Women's Basketball on Saturday.

The No. 3 Blue Streaks' 17-game home winning streak and 10-game overall winning streak concluded at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, as Marietta dealt John Carroll its first home loss since February 15, 2020.

In Marietta's first trip to the DeCarlo Center in 742 days, the Pioneers gifted John Carroll an 81-80 defeat in an end-to-end thrilling ballgame.

The Pioneers entered like a team thinking upset, with a 15-9 run in the opening six minutes. Nicole Heffington and Jaylen Hoffmann erased the margin with a 9-0 run. But Marietta had the last laugh of the quarter, with a 3-pointer as time expired to knot the ballgame at 20 heading into the second.

The Blue Streaks opened the second stanza strongly, with a 9-0 stretch, highlighted by a 3-point play by Olivia Nagy. Kaelyn Underwood kept the lead at nine points with another and-one to set the score at 36-27 with 3:56 left in the quarter. Marietta responded in kind, with a quick flurry of layups. The Pioneers got a small 4-1 run late in the half to slim JCU's lead to 41-40 at the break.

Gabrielle Gevaudan hit a quick triple early in the third, and later pushed the lead to seven at 51-44 around the seven-minute mark. After a Hannah Bouchy three, Marietta nailed a pair of triples to snag a 55-54 lead with 3:45 remaining. Momentum shifted to Marietta, despite some nice shots by JCU. The visitors possessed a 63-60 lead after three.

John Carroll grabbed the lead back in the first minute of the fourth, thanks to two Abby Adler layups. But again, quick pushes in the paint keyed another Marietta run, and the Pioneers enjoyed a 73-67 lead with 6:21 to play.

Heffington and Nagy took over the next couple minutes with strong play inside, evening things up at 73. The teams traded buckets to square it up again at 77 with 2:14 left. A jumper and a layup, plus some JCU misses, allowed Marietta to push ahead, 81-77, leading to a JCU timeout with 45 seconds left.

Out of the timeout, Nicole Heffington drained a 3-pointer, skimming the margin to 1 point. Marietta missed a layup with 25 seconds left, as Nagy swatted it to give John Carroll the last shot. Unfortunately, a jumper as time expired did not go in, and the Blue Streaks' long winning streaks were foiled.

Nagy and Heffington tied for the team lead with 20 points apiece. Nagy dominated in the post, grabbing 20 rebounds, her second such time hitting 20 and 20 (the other time: 23 points, 28 rebounds on 2/19/20). The Lakewood native also had 5 blocks plus 4 assists. Heffington notched 8 assists, too. Hannah Bouchy and Kaelyn Underwood earned 10 points apiece, as well.

Marietta's bench helped greatly, as the Pioneers' bench outscored JCU's, 43-19. John Carroll did have more rebounds, 39-33, but Marietta got 83 shots to JCU's 61. John Carroll was efficient, though, shooting 50.8% from the field.

John Carroll's road does not get any easier, as No. 11 Transylvania will welcome John Carroll on Monday for a 3 p.m. matchup.
