Women's Basketball Can't Overcome Slow Start at #8/11 Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A slow start and foul trouble doomed John Carroll Women's Basketball on Monday.

In a road matchup with Transylvania in the opening game of the Transylvania Holiday Classic, the Blue Streaks suffered their second straight loss.

The Pioneers, ranked No. 8 in last week's WBCA poll and No. 11 in last week's D3hoops.com poll, handed the Blue Streaks an 83-75 defeat at the Clive M. Beck Center.

In the first-ever matchup between the two teams, the Pioneers poured it on early. After Olivia Nagy scored the first points of the game on a layup 30 seconds in, Transylvania burst to a 16-0 run. Nagy finally ended the downpour with a layup at 3:37 of the quarter.

The Pioneers continued to play suffocating defense the rest of the quarter, as Nicole Heffington managed a free throw to trim the deficit to 23-5 entering the second quarter. JCU shot just 2-of-18 in the opener.

The Blue Streaks came alive in the second quarter. After Transy pushed the margin to 19 points, Abby Adler helped change the tone a bit with an early 3-pointer. Still, the Pioneers pushed the pace and stretched the lead to 22 at 3:16 of the period. In the final 2:05 of the quarter, Adler tallied 8 points and an assist to slim the deficit to 39-28 entering the break.

The story of the third quarter was the Pioneers answering every JCU challenge. Triples by Adler and Heffington were quickly responded to with treys by the Pioneers. Try as the Blue Streaks might, the Pioneers didn't let JCU back in the game, never allowing the margin to go below nine. The hosts held a 63-46 lead after three.

With 6:10 to play, Kaelyn Underwood hit a layup to slim the deficit to 10, and a Heffington layup dropped it to nine. But as the Blue Streaks fouled to try to spur a comeback, the Pioneers hit free throw after free throw. In the end, the Pioneers preserved a safe lead, walking away with an 83-75 win.

Abby Adler starred in the win, with a career-high 29 points, along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The veteran nailed five 3-pointers, along with 8-of-8 free throws. Heffington hit a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, along with 6 assists.

Two Blue Streaks fouled out and two others had four fouls, with 27 fouls as a team. The Pioneers hit 27-of-34 free throws. The Pioneers enjoyed a 47-37 rebounding margin, though the Blue Streaks scored more points in the paint, 38-24.

The Blue Streaks have a chance to bounceback on Tuesday, as they'll face off with Maryville (TN) in the second game of the Transylvania Holiday Classic at 1 p.m.
