UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On Friday night, John Carroll University Men's Swimming & Diving took the water at Johnson Natatorium for the first time with fans since January 18, 2020.

With a boisterous crowd in attendance, the Blue & Gold took care of business, defeating Notre Dame College 177-85.

The beginning of the meet set the rhythm for John Carroll as they kicked off the competition in a winning fashion.

In the 200 medley relay, John Carroll's "A" team comprised of Liam McDonnell, Adam Lenz, Bryce Liddell and Michael Heller took home the first place finish via a time of 1:34.88. Not long after, JCU's "B" relay team of Forrest Campbell, River Flatley, Jonah Venos and Westin Fishel captured a third place finish with a 1:36.66 finish.

In the longest race of the night, the 1000 Free, Erik Sriubas, finished with the top time in the event, 10:24.46, notching him a gold place finish. Following closely behind, freshman Andrew Chiappetta proved to be a strong asset to the team finishing with a time of 10:29.36 for the second place spot on the podium.

In the 200 Free, John Carroll swept the podium for the first time of the night. Aidan O'Neill took the top spot with a finishing time of 1:48.78, followed by Jake Farr (1:49.06) and Luke Novak (1:52.17) for the Blue and Gold.

The Blue Streaks hit 2-3 in the 50 Back, with Jonathan Simoes tagging a 25.73 and Austin Davis earning a 25.92.

In both the 50 and the 100 Breaststroke, the Blue Streaks' tandem of Jonah Venos and Adam Lenz led the way with 1-2 punches. In the 50 Breast, Venos clocked a nice 26.51 and Lenz tallied a 28.31. In the 100 Breast, Venos clocked a time of 1:00.49, followed by Lenz in the second spot with a time of 1:02.62.

To no surprise, Liam McDonnell made quick work of the 100 Fly, rolling to first place in 51.06. Bryce Liddell followed afterwards with a second-place mark of 53.07. McDonnell  later won the 100 Back with a top time of 52.97. Luke Novak followed his lead in the event in third at 55.90.

The speedster Adam Lenz conquered the field in the 50 Free, with a conquering time of 21.85. Forrest Campbell notched third in 22.45 after swimming the lengthy 1000 Free earlier.

Following the first diving break, Austin Davis and Jake Farr clipped second and third in the 100 Free, with times of 48.51 and 49.67.

The first-year Andrew Chiappetta captured his first career victory, winning the race with a time of 5:01.95 in the 500 freestyle race. Fellow freshman Bryce Liddell then bested the field in the 50 Fly with a time of 24.09.

"Two of our freshmen recorded their first collegiate victories," said Head Coach Tanner Barton. "Andrew Chiappetta put together a nice 500 Freestyle and Bryce Liddell emerged victorious in the 50 Butterfly.  As the rest of the season unfolds, it will be fun to watch those two."

In the final individual event of the night, McDonnell claimed another win, touching the wall at 52.88. Davis (54.39) and Venos (54.76) completed the sweep for the Blue & Gold.

The 200 Medley Relay capped off the night. In a close finish, JCU's A squad of Liddell, Aidan O'Neill, Westin Fishel, and Michael Heller dropped to second with a time of 1:29.56.

"It was great to be back in Johnson Natatorium and competing in front of our loyal fans," said Barton. "I am proud of both programs for recording impressive team victories after a difficult week of training."

The Blue and Gold will travel to Oberlin, Ohio to compete against Oberlin College in a non-conference meet on Friday, Dec. 17, at 6:30 p.m.
