Women's Basketball Surges Past Purple Raiders in Alliance

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The John Carroll University Women's Basketball team extended its undefeated record on the season in Alliance on Wednesday, December 8.

Winning by a final score of 69-56, the Blue Streaks maintained control of the Mount Union Purple Raiders for most of the game.

With the victory, JCU upped its record to 6-0 on the season, including 2-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

After a slow start and 3:50 to go in the first quarter, Mount Union held an 11-8 lead. But John Carroll quickly asserted dominance with a 13-0 run. Nicole Heffington buried a pair of 3-pointers, Jaylen Hoffmann hit a deep shot and Abby Adler helped out with a layup to power the surge.

The score at the end of the first quarter was 21-13, Blue Streaks. From there on, the Blue Streaks were in the driver's seat.

The Blue Streaks played a nice defensive game in the second quarter, only allowing 11 points by the Purple Raiders.

Nicole Heffington posted a nice statline in the first half. The veteran had 15 points after two quarters, carrying the Blue Streaks to a 37-24 halftime lead.

Throughout the third and fourth quarters, John Carroll never led by less than double digits. The score after the third quarter was 54-40, with a Hoffmann jumper providing the final points of the quarter.

The Blue Streaks outscored Mount Union in the third quarter, 17-16. John Carroll scored 15 points in the fourth. Mount Union stuck with them and scored 16 points, however, the hosts were not able to close the gap.

The Blue Streaks played strong in the paint game, with 36 points in the paint by the end of the game compared to the Purple Raiders' 20 points scored in the painted area.

Rebounding-machine Olivia Nagy racked up 14 rebounds, four of them being offensive. She once again accrued a double-double with 13 points, and added 5 blocks. Heffington, the leading scorer this season, converted many of Nagy's rebounds to 20 points for John Carroll. Abby Adler and Jaylen Hoffmann added to this total with 9 points and 13 points, respectively.

Mount Union out-rebounded John Carroll, 40-35. However, the Blue Streaks tallied a 48.2 field goal percentage over 56 attempts, whereas the Purple Raiders shot with a 29.4 field goal percentage over 68 attempts.

The Blue Streaks will now head back home to University Heights, prepping for a Saturday OAC showdown against Capital, with tip-off slated for 1 pm.
