Women's Swimming & Diving Pens Victory to Open Tanner Barton Era

| By:
ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Tanner Barton era began in style as the Blue Streak women's swimming and diving team defeated the Mount Union Purple Raiders, 170-126.

This marks the seventh straight victory in a dual meet over the Purple Raiders.

"I am very happy with how well our team performed today," said Barton after his first JCU win. "The team camaraderie and results were great to open the season. Gwyn had a wonderful start to the season, and Ynyra came through with some big swims. Lots of swimmers contributed to a wonderful win to start 2021."

The meet began with a win in the 200 Medley Relay by Spenser Kale, Gwyn Ledrick, Tori Vale, and Kyleah Gaydos in a time of 1:53.88.

Ynyra Bohan followed it up with a win of her own in the 1000 Free.  The sophomore swam the event in 11:18.98, which beat the second place finisher on Mount Union by just over eight seconds.  She also won the 200 Butterfly in a dominant 2:17.23 fashion, which bested her next competitor by just under seven seconds.

The Blue Streaks also got a strong individual performance from Ledrick, who won the 100 Breaststroke in 1:08.13.  The senior All-American also earned victories in the 100 freestyle (54.54) and 200 IM (2:12.69).

Kale won the 100 Backstroke in 1:03.83 and came in second in the 200 Backstroke (2:22.10).  Freshman Bojena Gross picked up her first collegiate victory with a win in the 200 breaststroke (2:37.06), exactly nine seconds ahead of second place finisher Katelin Avenir.

Another highlight in the individual events came when Tori Vale, Bohan, and Anna Glass placed first, second, and third respectively in the 100 butterfly.  Vale edged out Bohan by only a tenth of a second while Glass came in just .25 seconds later.

John Carroll closed out its season-opening victory with a second place finish in the one meter diving event from Catherine Steinwachs (126.10).  The three meter dive did not take place due to the Purple Raiders not having such a board.

The Blue Streaks look to go 2-0 on the season as they head to Berea and take on the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
