Volleyball Drops Pair of Road Matches to Heidelberg

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- In a road doubleheader on Tuesday, John Carroll University Volleyball fell to the Heidelberg University Student Princes after a difficult evening of competition on April 6.

Heidelberg went 3-0 in the first match with scores of 24-26, 22-25, 23-25. In the second match, the Student Princes swept John Carroll, 19-25, 19-25, 27-29.

Match 1

At the beginning of the first set, the two squads kept the score close, with neither team getting ahead by more than three points at a time. Heidelberg was the first to pull away, going on a six score run to take the lead. Down 23-16, John Carroll found momentum and scored eight consecutive points to take control of the score, 24-23. But the Student Princes finished the game, scoring three more times and stopping the Blue and Gold offense, winning the first set 26-24.

Keeping their offensive drive from the first set, the second set began with quick scores from Heidelberg. John Carroll had sparks in their offense throughout the game, the biggest resulting in a 6-point run, enabling them to take command of the score, 17-16. The squads traded the lead back and forth for the rest of the set, until Heidelberg found victory following five consecutive scores at the end of the game.

The third set score once again teetered between the two teams for the entire game, as each went on small runs on the offensive end. Heidelberg was able to reign in this final set, as they swept the first match 3-0.

Kailee Herbst led the Blue Streaks with nine kills, followed by Cassi Calamunci and Carleen Ellerbruch who tabbed seven each. Ally Bartolone topped the team with 24 assists. Lexi MacDonald (15), Calamunci (15), and Bartolone (11) all hit double digits in digs, as JCU tallied nine service aces as a team.

Match 2

Heidelberg took control of the scoreboard early on as they continued their offensive tirade into the first set of the second match. A kill by Abigail Kirk began a scoring run for the Blue Streaks, but the Student Princes regained their footing and won the first set 19-25.

The second set was more of the same, as Heidelberg led John Carroll for the majority of the game. The Blue and Gold had a small kick at the end of the set, but it was too late and Heidelberg went up 2-0 in the match score.

The third set was a last ditch effort by the Blue Streaks, as their momentum came at the end of the set. Small runs kept John Carroll in the competition, giving them the opportunity to finish this set with a victory. Unfortunately, the Student Princes fought back and ended this one 27-29 in favor of Heidelberg.

Calamunci led John Carroll with 16 kills, while Kirk and Herbst recorded eight and six kills, respectively. Once again Bartolone dominated assists, tallying 35 for the match.

With the two losses against Heidelberg, the Blue and Gold's record drops to 6-10 for the season.

The Blue Streaks are back in action against Wilmington College on April 9 in the doubleheader format at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m in University Heights, Ohio.
