Volleyball Holds Off Late Wilmington Rally for Pair of Sweeps

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The best time to be on a hot streak is right before the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. John Carroll ended their regular season after an impressive two match sweep in the final doubleheader of the season against the Wilmington Quakers.

The Blue Streaks won in the first match by scores of 25-22, 25-12, 25-14. John Carroll took care of business in the back end of the doubleheader, 25-16, 25-16, 26-24.

Before the excitement and first serve got underway, fans and teams in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center paused for a moment of silence to honor Chris Wenzler, the late Sports Information Director of John Carroll who passed away after his battle with cancer this summer. Wenzler spent much of his time working volleyball games during his career at John Carroll.

MATCH 1
In set one of the evening, John Carroll got off to a quick lead, courtesy of Ally Bartolone opening up the court with a service ace. John Carroll jumped out 7-2 in the opening minutes, but Wilmington responded by a six-point run taking advantage of John Carroll's errors. Wilmington took an 8-7 lead that they held onto until John Carroll went up 16-15.

The Quakers would be forced to take another timeout when JCU led 23-21. John Carroll secured the victory off of a service ace from Maddie Maziarz and beat Wilmington, 25-22.

During the second set of the night, Wilmington started out the second set with a service ace, but when Carleen Ellerburch was presented with the opportunity to serve, she did the same, tying things up at one a piece.

The Quakers took a timeout as John Carroll took a four-point lead, 10-6 due to an attack error from Wilmington. The Blue and Gold lead continued to rise, as they jumped out to their biggest advantage of the set, 15-7, after capitalizing on three straight errors from Wilmington.

Ultimately, John Carroll held on to win the second set 25-12 after a huge block from Madison Henninger and Ava Nice

The third set was the most important for both teams, with it being Wilmington's lifeline and John Carroll's path to a 3-0 sweep. John Carroll took full advantage of the opportunity presented and captured the sweep.

John Carroll jumped out in front by 10-4 and Wilmington took another timeout to come up with their game plan for the remainder of set three. The Blue and Gold kept up their persistence and won 25-14 and swept the Quakers.

The leaders in the attack for the Blue Streaks consisted of a team dynamic. Cassi Calamunci, Kailee Herbst, Heininger, and Nice all recorded seven kills for the Blue Streaks. On the defensive side, Calamunci recorded 17 digs. Bartolone set up the majority of the points with 17 assists.

MATCH 2
After sweeping the Quakers in the first game, the Blue Streaks took no time to continue their winning ways. They jumped out to a 6-2 advantage early on. The offensive dominance continued and John Carroll won their first set by a score of 25-16 after a set-winning kill by Herbst.

In set two, John Carroll started with a quick pace, as they did the whole night. John Carroll went up on a 5-1 advantage in the beginning. Despite the score in some of the previous sets of the night, Wilmington kept the second set relatively close, not giving John Carroll a huge advantage. A little past the midway point, JCU led by four points (13-9). JCU went on to win the second set, 25-16.

John Carroll was presented once again with the opportunity to garner another sweep on the night. The task was not easy and the third set ended up being the most thrilling set of the night.

John Carroll started out with the lead once again, taking an 8-3 advantage resulting in a Quaker timeout. Wilmington wasted no time to start climbing their way back up after that break. John Carroll and Wilmington were all tied up at 15 after a kill from Joy Bebe. Soon after, the Quakers took a 16-14 lead off of a ball handling error on JCU.

Wilmington then went on a three point scoring streak, putting them up 18-15, their biggest advantage of the set to that point. They continued to streak past JCU, taking a 23-18 advantage.

John Carroll showed their resilience, as they mounted the comeback with Wilmington being one point away from winning the set. John Carroll went on a 7-point run to capture their second sweep of the night after a 26-24 victory in the third set. The winning kill was credited to Calamunci.

The leaders in the second match were Calamunci with 12 kills and Herbst with eight. Bartolone contributed 18 assists. Calamunci notched 16 digs and Maddie Maiarz followed behind with 15.

Tonight's two sweeps mark the Blue Streak's third and fourth sweep of the season. Their last sweep was against Capital on March 19.

John Carroll finishes the regular season with a mark of 8-10, 8-10 OAC. The Blue Streaks next mission will be the OAC Tournament. JCU will be away for the game on Tuesday with the serve scheduled to start at 7:00 pm. Stick with jcusports.com for further details on who John Carroll will face.
