Volleyball Competes in Denison Tri-Match, Dropping 2 Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The John Carroll University Volleyball team headed down to Granville for the Denison Tri-Match and lost 3-1 and 3-0 to the Big Reds and Earlham, respectfully.
 
After Denison won the first set 25-21, the Blue Streaks fought back with a 25-18 second set victory to tie the match 1-1.
 
However, the Big Reds shut the door with 25-20 wins in both the third and fourth sets, racing to 6-1 and 12-3 leads right out of the gate respectfully.
 
Kailee Herbst led the way with 13 kills for JCU while Ally Bartolone added 31 assists.
 
Despite hitting only .154 and committing 32 errors, three players had 15 or more kills for Denison while Kirby MacKinnon tacked on 49 assists.
 
Against Earlham, the Blue Streaks kept it close in the first set rallying back from a 12-4 deficit to even the score 17-17 but ultimately fell 25-21.
 
Tied 8-8 in the second set, the Quakers found their grove and scored 11 of the next 14 points to aid in their 25-19 victory.
 
The third set, however, was much more of a back-and-forth affair.
 
With the Blue Streaks maintaining a 16-13 lead, Earlham rattled off five straight points to take an 18-16 advantage.  Despite JCU tying the score on two separate occasions after, the Quakers put the nail in the coffin with three straight points to win 25-22.
 
Brooke Hjerpe tallied 12 kills while Bartolone managed 25 assists for John Carroll.  As a team, the Blue Streaks only registered 10 errors, which is the least amount they have had in a loss all season.
 
Sarah Dickman had 16 kills and Olivia Kyrk added 12 while hitting .500 for the Quakers.  Erin Wagner also contributed 44 assists and 20 digs.
 
JCU, who has lost six of their last seven matches, will look to get back on track as they head home to face Case Western Reserve on Wednesday, September 29 at 7pm.
