Men's Soccer Suffers Home Loss to Penn State Behrend

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Despite having a plethora of opportunities, Wednesday night did not belong to John Carroll University Men's Soccer.

The Blue Streaks suffered a tough 2-1 loss to the Penn State Behrend Lions at Don Shula Stadium.

With the loss, John Carroll Men's Soccer team drops to 3-3-2 on the season.

The non-conference game started with the Blue Streaks controlling possession on offense, earning potential shot attempts, but no finishes.

There were little slivers of possible goals for the Lions, but the Blue and Gold rallied around a tight defensive line.

As the buzzer sounded for halftime the scoreboard read 0-0.

The score stood deadlocked despite JCU seeing an overwhelming majority of the possession. The hosts outshot Penn State Behrend in the opening period, 16-1. The Lions made 7 saves in the first half, while Connor Gynn did not need to make any for JCU.

When the second half started, the intensity and scoring picked up.

John Carroll was awarded a penalty kick after a foul inside the box in the 49th minute. Senior Lawrence Cersosimo II was chosen to do the honors of taking the free shot.

Cersosimo lined up and found the back of the net through the bottom right corner of the goal, putting a tick on the scoreboard for the Blue Streaks.

With the momentum swaying in their direction, the Blue and Gold did not take their foot off the offensive gas.

Brenden Swann found himself at the top of the box, aiming for a shot that went just slightly left of the goal.

Penn State Behrend started to rally, after a JCU cornerkick went toward mid field, giving the Lions the opportunity for a fast break on offense that was stopped by JCU defender Daniel Kalic

The ball was continuously traded between these two teams as the physicality intensified towards the end of the match.

The Lions finally put one in the goal with 15 minutes left in regulation and started to take back some of the momentum on offense.

Penn State Behrend finalized their win with another score with under four minutes remaining in the game.

As the clock ticked down, John Carroll scrambled to find another opportunity to score, but the hope was stripped away as the buzzer sounded, marking the end of the match.

John Carroll owned the vast majority of the shots, seeing a 28-7 advantage in shots and a 12-3 margin in shots on goal. In addition, JCU got 14 corner kicks to only one for the visitors.

The Blue Streaks will look to bounce back as they play on Saturday, October 2 against Muskingum University at home during McCarthy Weekend. The contest will mark the start of OAC October for JCU.
